YOUNGSTOWN Wilson runs past Wellsville

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Wilson High boys basketball team hit four 3-pointers during a 21-0 third quarter run to beat visiting Wellsville 50-43 Friday night.
Wellsville point guard Brett Hambleton hit his second 3-pointer of the game with 5:50 left in the third quarter to give the Tigers (11-9) a 28-22 lead. But Wilson's Carlton Sims -- who scored all eight of his points during the run -- drilled a 3-pointer and Antwaun Smith added a field goal and a free throw to tie the game.
Sims then hit another 3 to make it 31-28 and the Redmen never trailed again.
"Wilson is a good team and a little too strong for us inside," Tiger coach Jim Meissner said.
"They are as talented as any team we have played this season and we just didn't have an answer to their third quarter run, but this was a good game to ready us for tournament play."
Sealing the deal: Wilson out-scored Wellsville 24-7 during the third quarter and had runs of 5-0 and 8-0 in the fourth to put it away.
"When we were behind in the third quarter I told our guys to go to full court pressure and this got our transition game going," Wilson coach Mark Cherol said.
Randall Poindexter, a 6-2 junior, scored 12 points and grabbed 17 of Wilson's 41 rebounds. Senior Ellis Moody added 12 points and five steals for the Redmen (10-9).
Wilson junior Antwaun Johnson added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Hambleton led Wellsville with 12 points and Jared Mike added eight points, eight rebounds, six blocks and four assists.
