Gambling opposition
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Rev. Dr. D. Larry Kline, senior pastor of Trinity United Methodist Church, is calling on churches, synagogues and mosques to come together in an organizational meeting to form a united front to support the economic and spiritual development of Youngstown and other communities and to oppose gambling in all forms.
The Rev. Mr. Kline said, "It's time to fund government and education in the old fashioned way, as a priority with sound moral and economic integrity."
Dr. Kline also stated that a meeting is being sought with Governor Taft and other state legislators by a delegation of area clergy, business and political leaders. For more information, contact the church. The pastor urged members of different faiths to contact Taft to voice opposition to gambling in the Mahoning Valley.
Death-penalty program
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Office of Pro-Life Activities of the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown and St. Brendan Parish will sponsor an evening of reflection and prayer for an end to the death penalty and for victims of violence from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at St. Brendan's.
Participants will view and discuss the video, "Death No More: A Look at the Death Penalty." Evening prayer will follow, with prayers for John Byrd, Monte Tewksbury, their families, and for all victims of violence.
John Byrd is scheduled to be executed by the state of Ohio at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Byrd is convicted of killing Monte Tewksbury during a 1993 robbery.
Prayer rally set
CANFIELD -- The Greater Youngstown Coalition of Christians will have a prayer rally at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 in Christian Life Center.
Community services
COLUMBIANA -- At 7 p.m. Tuesdays through March 19 during Lent, community services will be held in Grace Church. They will include prayer, song and musical interludes. The services were designed by local musician Chip Richter and include musicians from Midway Mennonite Church, Grace Church, The Upper Room, First United Methodist Church, and the Columbiana Tabernacle.
Practical introductionto Christianity
GIRARD -- Girard First United Methodist Church will begin a new "Alpha Course" at 5 p.m. Feb. 24. The 10-week practical introduction to the Christian faith offers answers to some key questions. Each weekly session begins with an informal dinner, followed by video presentations, and ends with small-group discussion and interaction. Call (330) 545-4361.
Bread spirituality

AUSTINTOWN -- St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church will have Rosary devotions and hymns, followed by the Supplikatsia, the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 7 p.m. Thursday.
