YOUNGSTOWN -- Eagle Heights Academy will be accepting applications for its waiting list for the 2002-03 school year at the school on the following schedule: 9 a.m. to noon March 2, 16 and 30; and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. March 8. Children on the waiting list must reapply. The school will conduct a drawing 4 p.m. April 12 to determine placement.
U.S official names rep
WASHINGTON -- Sunny Abello Chico has been named Region V representative for U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige. With headquarters in Chicago, Region V includes Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The U.S. Department of Education maintains 10 regional offices to represent department programs and interests.
Chico, a native of Camaguey, Cuba, most recently served as executive director of institutional advancement for Waubonsee Community College. From 1995 to 1997, Chico was assistant to former Lt. Gov. Bob Kustra in the area of education policy.
Initiative wins funding
CLEVELAND -- Cleveland State University's College of Education has won $1 million in federal funding for its "K-16 Urban School Leadership Initiative." The money will be used to concentrate the resources of the university on the needs of urban schools in the greater Cleveland area, specifically the Cleveland city schools. The initiative also aims to increase the quality of the preparation, retention and training of teachers and principals.
Quota sets deadline
SALEM -- Application deadline is April 1 for the $1,000 Mona McArtor Award offered by Quota International of Salem. Applicants must be enrolled or plan to enroll in a college and major in audiology, speech pathology or deaf education. Applicants also must reside and be a graduate or a graduating high school senior from Salem, Lisbon, United Local, Leetonia, West Branch, Carollton or Canfield.
