Korey Howard of Youngstown, a freshman at Cumberland in Williamsburg, Ky., placed first in two categories at the Asbury Invitational speech tournament. Howard was first in novice impromptu speaking and in the informative categories. Howard also was the first-place Pentathlon winner.
KENT STATE UNIVERSITY
Shenika Oliver of Warren has been named one of the American Advertising Federation Foundation's Most Promising Minority Students for 2002. She was to attend a celebration at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York Feb. 7-8. Oliver is advertising sales manager for the Daily Kent Stater at KSU, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and past president of the KSU chapter of the AAF. She was an intern at the Cleveland Plain Dealer last summer in the display advertising department.
Erica M. Fischer, a 1998 graduate of Boardman High School, received the Arts and Sciences Senior Leader Award from KSU. Fischer, who graduated magna cum laude in December with a bachelor's degree in justice studies and psychology, also received the Sherry Jo Luft Memorial Award and was a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Bernie Fischer of Boardman.
OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY
Three local students in The Ohio State University's business college have received $5,000 scholarships: Tara Magusiak and Megan Nellis of Canfield and Jonathan Stoudt of Salem. The scholarships are funded by the Mitte Foundation, a Texas-based philanthropic organization. Magusiak is a junior majoring in accounting and the daughter of Evelyn McCabe. Nellis is studying for her master's degree in business administration and is the daughter of Patricia and James Nellis. Stoudt is a freshman majoring in finance and is the son of Richard and Deborah Stoudt.
