Tariff must be higher,Weirton Steel CEO says
WEIRTON, W.Va. -- Weirton Steel Corp. said its chief executive, John Walker, was adamant with White House officials Thursday that a tariff of at least 40 percent against steel imports is needed and that an ongoing rumor of a 20 percent tariff is not acceptable.
"In regard to the rumor the administration will impose a 20 percent tariff, I told them it will not be acceptable by the companies nor the unions. I explained if the president imposes 20 percent, it will be woefully inadequate, and he may as well do nothing," Walker said.
Dell reports an increasein 4th-quarter profits
AUSTIN, Texas -- Dell Computer Corp. posted a 5 percent increase in fourth-quarter profits, matching Wall Street expectations despite a decline in sales from a year earlier.
Dell, the largest maker of personal computers, said Thursday it earned $456 million, or 17 cents a share, compared with a profit of $434 million, or 16 cents a share, in the quarter a year ago.
