BOARDMAN Austintown teens call police and end up with drug charges

Police also are investigating a robbery at a township hotel.
BOARDMAN -- Two Austintown teens who called police to report a crime Thursday afternoon ended up facing drug charges themselves.
The girls, both 17-year-old seniors at Fitch High School, told police they were parking in the Southern Park Mall lot about 4 p.m. when they were confronted by two other females who repeatedly punched and pulled one of the girls.
Police reports said the two unidentified females who did the attacking jumped into a car driven by another girl and took off immediately after the altercation.
Smell of marijuana: The girls called police to report the assault, but when the officer arrived, reports say, he smelled marijuana coming from inside the 1999 Chevy S10 pickup the girls were driving.
Officers searched the truck and found marijuana, marijuana pipes, rolling papers and what police believe to be cocaine.
One girl was given a citation for drug abuse marijuana and charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and felony drug abuse of cocaine. The other girl is charged with misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia.
Hotel robbed: In an unrelated matter, police are investigating a Thursday night robbery at the Hampton Inn on Tiffany South.
The assistant manager told police a man came into the business, started a conversation, then entered the office. He put his hand in his jacket as if he had a gun and demanded money. The thief escaped with $300.
The Microtel on South Avenue was robbed in a similar way earlier this week, but police cannot say for sure if the two robberies are connected.
