MAC/TAC Struthers turns back Howland for 10th win

STRUTHERS -- Jason Martin scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half, as the Struthers High basketball team used a 20-8 third quarter advantage to hold off Howland 59-56 Tuesday in the Metro Athletic Conference.
Nick Leiter and Jim Franceschelli each hit four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. Martin, Jason Mitchell and Jim Tabak each grabbed seven rebounds for Struthers (10-8, 6-3). Tabak scored 13 points and Leiter added 11, four steals and four assists.
Scott Day had 19 points and eight rebounds, and Jason Melidona added 15 points for Howland (6-12, 3-6).
Poland 74, Salem 38: SALEM -- David McGarry scored 18 points and Jamie Dunn added 17 more for Poland. Neil Harris also scored nine points for the Bulldogs (15-2, 9-0 MAC).
Salem (1-17, 0-9) was led by Zac Grey with 10 points, while Travis Mong had eight and Mike Bailey seven.
Niles 53, Canfield 47: NILES -- The Red Dragons (14-3, 6-3 MAC) rallied in the fourth quarter to prevail.
Dan Jones connected on a 3-pointer to put Niles ahead 48-47. Tim Rupert made a basket and Dan Jones made a basket and free throw to complete an 8-0 run.
David Soda led the Red Dragons with 20 points. Jason Shelton chipped in with 12.
Chase Booms and Frank Turocy led the Cardinals (8-10, 3-6) with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Champion 65, Girard 63: GIRARD -- Girard's Walter Jones missed a 5-footer at the buzzer as Champion held off Girard in a Trumbull Athletic Conference game.
Champion (10-7, 7-6) out-scored Girard 40-32 in the second half and held an 18-7 scoring edge at the foul line.
Mark Kish scored 20 points and Kevin Stingel added 11 points and eight rebounds for Champion. Randy Mason scored 20 points and Jones added 14 for Girard (6-12, 4-10).
Hubbard 68, Brookfield 52: HUBBARD -- Anthony Smith poured in 25 points to help lift Hubbard over Brookfield.
Jason Lenzi added 12 points and Adam Jablonski 11 for the Eagles (8-10, 6-8 TAC).
Brookfield (6-11, 2-11) was led by Julian Hayes with 17 points and Scott Stofan with 10.
