DISTRICT ROUNDUP Williams' shot in OT nets Mooney win



The Cardinals' 62-61 victory over Wilson left both teams with 9-9 records.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Rashad Williams hit one of two free throws with 6.6 seconds remaining in the second overtime, giving Cardinal Mooney High a 62-61 win over visiting Woodrow Wilson in a boys non-conference basketball game Tuesday night.
Williams was fouled when he drove toward the basket in the waning seconds. He made the first free throw attempt and missed the second. Wilson (9-9) got one final shot, but it bounced off the backboard from 35 feet away.
The Redmen made up a 13-point deficit by out-scoring Mooney 23-9 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Mooney (9-9) appeared to have won the game in the final seconds of the first overtime on Jeff Hehr's basket, but it was waved off after basket interference was whistled.
Curtis Ingram scored 20 points to lead Mooney, while Joe Burke added 17 points and Ron Stoops 12.
Wilson got 18 points from Randall Poindexter and 16 from Antwaun Johnson. Ellis Moody added 10 points for the Redmen.
West Branch 57, Waterloo 40: BELOIT -- Nate Greenawalt and Sam Jones each scored 12 points, and West Branch recovered from a four-point third quarter to defeat Waterloo in a non-conference game.
Waterloo (8-9) out-scored the Warriors (7-11) 8-4 in the third but couldn't overcome West Branch's dominance throughout.
Dan Sheaffer led Waterloo with 22 points.
Maplewood 60, Fairport Harbor 35: CORTLAND -- Kevin Peterson scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds as Maplewood took a 20-10 halftime lead to cruise past Fairport Harbor.
Matt Chronister scored 10 points, Joe Pease had six assists and Joey Young added four steals for Maplewood (12-7, 11-4 East Suburban Conference).
Jason Lynch scored 12 points for Fairport Harbor (6-10, 6-9).
Compass 86, Orange Christian 53: YOUNGSTOWN -- Compass Education Center took a 31-4 first-quarter lead.
Jamar Scales scored 21 points to lead six players in double figures for Compass (13-5). Darren Ford added 13 points.
Brandon Simpson led Orange Christian with 16 points.
