COLUMBIANA -- The city planning commission approved a preliminary plan for developer Charles Beiling's Eldon Court, a 12-lot housing development on Beverly Drive. The development will be for single-family homes, said Bob Belding, city building and zoning officer. The commission also approved a split of the Home Savings and Loan lot on state Route 46. Belding said William Kimpel has agreed to purchase a portion of the bank property to build a new jewelry store. Also approved by the commission was a site plan review for Steve and Kitty Javens to operate a martial arts studio at 101 Columbiana Plaza. Clyde Kimble requested permission for a home business at 103 S. Vine St. He plans to repair and rebuild firearms.
Multiple-vehicle wreckleaves 2 people dead
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Icy roads left two people dead in a multiple car, tractor-trailer and truck accident this morning on Interstate 80 in Mercer County. Pennsylvania State Police said one westbound lane was closed for most of the morning near the 20-mile marker, which is between the Interstate 79 junction and Grove City. Police were expected to close both lanes when they removed those who had died in the crash. The names of those involved were not being released by police this morning. Mercer County Deputy Coroner Scott Black said they were still trying to locate relatives. Both were pronounced dead at the scene at about 6:45 a.m., he said. Police said there were at least two tractor-trailers, a pickup truck and multiple cars involved in the crash, which occurred at about 5:30 a.m.
Army corps to performat YSU basketball game
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Army's Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, stationed at Fort Myer, Va., will perform during the halftime show of the Youngstown State men's basketball game against the Cleveland State Vikings Thursday at Beeghly Center. The game begins at 7:30 p.m. Normally reserved for Department of State activities, the nationally known musical group, made up of 22 musicians, is the only unit of its kind in the Armed Forces. The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps recalls the days of the American Revolution, wearing uniforms patterned after those worn by musicians of Gen. George Washington's Continental Army.
Judges Vukovich, Waitefile their petitions
YOUNGSTOWN -- Judges Joseph J. Vukovich and Cheryl L. Waite, both Democrats, were to file their nominating petitions today seeking re-election to their seats on the 7th District Court of Appeals. Judge Vukovich is running for the term that begins Feb. 9, 2003, and Judge Waite is running for the term that begins Feb. 10, 2003. Judge C. Ashley Pike of Columbiana County Common Pleas Court, a Republican, has said he's considering a run for a seat on the court. The four-person 7th District court consists of Mahoning, Columbiana, Carroll, Harrison, Jefferson, Belmont, Monroe and Noble.
Phony prescription
SHARON, Pa. -- Two Lawrence County men face charges in Mercer County, accused of trying to pass a fake prescription. Keith Howard Wheale, 42, of Crescent Drive, New Castle, and Jason J. Cameron, 28, of Eighth Street, Bessemer, were arrested at about midnight at a home on East Shenango Street in Sharpsville. Sharon police said Wheale tried to pass a fake prescription for pain relievers Soma and Lorcet at the Rite Aid on East State Street. The pharmacist became suspicious and started making telephone calls about the prescriptions, police said. Wheale then grabbed the drugs and ran out the door to a waiting car driven by Cameron, they said. Police found the men after pharmacy employees got their license plate number and car description. Both face charges of retail theft, criminal conspiracy and violations of the state's pharmacy act.
Facing forgery charge
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- A Farrell man is accused of trying to use a fake check to buy a Rolex watch. James T. Harris, 36, of Hamilton Avenue was arrested Tuesday and charged with forgery and criminal attempt at theft. Hermitage police said a $4,700 check from a nonexistent bank account for a Hubbard business was passed Sept. 5 at a Hermitage jewelry store. Harris was arraigned and placed in the Mercer County Jail after failing to post $5,000 bond.
