DETROIT -- Sophomore forward Heather Harris tied a career high with 23 points, but it wasn't enough as the Youngstown State women's basketball team lost to Detroit 82-69 Monday at Calihan Hall.
A native of Philo, the 6-foot Harris made 10-of-18 shots from the field and scored 14 points in the second half.
The Penguins (11-13, 7-6) missed an opportunity to take over sole possession of third place in the Horizon League. Instead, Detroit (13-11, 8-5) did.
Youngstown State scored the first seven points of the game and led 15-9 with 14 minutes, 20 seconds remaining in the first half.
But Detroit rallied to take a 26-24 lead at the 6:14 mark and then outscored the Penguins 21-3 over the next 5:48 to take a commanding 47-27 halftime lead.
Youngstown State could get no closer than 13 points in the second half.
"We started off well, then got extremely tired," Youngstown State coach Ed DiGregorio said. "Detroit outhustled us and outplayed us."
Junior guard Maggie Johnston added 12 points for the Penguins.
Youngstown State senior center Jen Horner, who was just named the Horizon League player of the week for last week, had seven points and eight rebounds against Detroit.
Titans leaders: The Titans got big games from senior guard Molly Peterman, who scored 28 points, and sophomore forward Randee Henry, who added 27 points and 13 rebounds.
Senior guard Michelle James recorded a double-double for Detroit with 13 points and 13 assists.
"Michelle James is an exceptional player and Molly Peterman really works her tail off," DiGregorio said.
Youngstown State had won the first meeting between the teams, 66-57, Jan. 10 at Beeghly Center, but the Penguins weren't able to muster the same effort on the road Monday. They were outrebounded 48-32.
"We'll now have to regroup," DiGregorio said. "We have our next two games at home and hopefully we'll get back on track."
The Penguins play UW-Green Bay in a 5:15 p.m. start Thursday at Beeghly Center and UW-Milwaukee on Feb. 21 at Beeghly. They will finish the regular season Feb. 24 at Wright State.
