Driver in hospital
LISBON -- Terry L. Endsley, 36 of 845 Newgarden Ave., Salem, was in serious condition this morning in Akron City Hospital with injuries suffered in a one-car accident in Butler Township.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported Endsley was the driver of a car involved in the Sunday accident in which his passenger, Benjamin M. Kastanek, 24, of 4467 Woodsdale Road, was killed. The patrol is still investigating the accident.
The patrol said Endlsey was driving south on Woodsdale Road about 4:43 a.m. Sunday when the car went off the left side of the road, striking a bridge, then an embankment, coming to rest in a creek.
It was the second fatal accident of the weekend in the county. Travis Ryan, 18 of Grafton Road, Leetonia, died Friday after an accident at Leetonia Road and state Route 558 in Salem Township.
Woman stabbed
SALEM -- Police are investigating the stabbing of a 43-year-old West Third Street woman. They were called to the Salem Community Hospital emergency room about 9:46 p.m. Monday. The woman came there to be treated for stab wounds on both thighs and her chest area. She told police a man she knew had attacked her earlier in the evening at her
In good condition
SALEM -- Michael Alexander, 28 of 2346 Parks Ave., Paris, Ohio, was in good condition this morning at Salem Community Hospital with injuries suffered in a one-car crash in Hanover Township. The Ohio State Highway Patrol said firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to remove him from his car. OSHP said Alexander was driving west on state Route 172 in Hanover Township west of Depot Road when the accident occurred Monday afternoon. The patrol said Alexander's pickup truck went off the left side of the road and struck a tree. He was wearing a seat belt and was cited for failure to control, the patrol said.
Blazer stolen
SALEM -- A city man reported to police that someone stole his 1997 Chevrolet Blazer from a municipal parking lot near Penn Avenue and East Pershing Street. The theft occurred between 6:40 p.m. and 8 p.m. Monday. The vehicle's value was not listed.
Hearing set
SALEM -- A preliminary hearing is set Thursday in Columbiana County Municipal Court in Salem for Victor Carreon Jr., 40, of 418 E. Third St. Carreon was charged by police Monday with intimidation, a third-degree felony; domestic violence, a first-degree misdemeanor and disorderly conduct, a fourth-degree misdemeanor. Police say Carreon threatened them with a knife Saturday evening when they came to his home regarding a domestic dispute. Carreon is free on bond.
Child safety seats
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Neshannock Township police will be on the lookout for child seat violators this week as they mark National Child Passenger Safety Week.
Police Superintendent Philip Carlo said they also will conduct child safety seat clinics and instructional demonstrations by appointment. For a demonstration, call (724) 654-4211. Pennsylvania law requires any child younger than age 4 to be in an approved child safety seat when riding in a vehicle.
Rebate program
HARRISBURG -- Applications are available for Pennsylvania's Property Tax and Rent Rebate Program for low-income households. To qualify, applicants must have household incomes of less than $15,000. The program is open to state residents ages 65 or over, widows or widowers age 50 or older and totally disabled persons 18 or older. The deadline for filing is July 1. Applications are available at the district offices of Sen. Robert D. Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, or by calling his office at (800) 222-8793. Applicants can also visit the state Department of Revenue Web site at www.revenue.state.pa.us/.
