Council rejects plan to build homes

CRAIG BEACH -- Village council has voted against a resolution to support the construction of 40 single-family homes in the village over the next few years.
The vote at Monday's meeting was 1 to 4, with council members Larry Ellis, James Becker, Cathy Braham and Wanda Sabol voting no. Councilman Bob Richards voted in favor of the resolution, while councilman George Meleski did not attend the meeting.
The NRP Group, a development firm in Cleveland, had been hoping to construct the homes for families who make less than $27,900 each year. The homes would be rented to the families by the Portage Area Development Corp.
NRP Principal Al Scott said the firm wasn't sure if it would proceed with the project without the resolution.
Ellis said village residents were opposed to construction of the homes.
