BASKETBALL GAME Farrell drops out of probe into fracas at high school

FARRELL, Pa.-- The city has dropped its investigation into a brawl at the Feb. 2 high school basketball game between Farrell and Sharon.
City Manager LaVon Saternow said Monday that, after consulting with the Mercer County district attorney, she decided to defer to that office's involvement in the investigation.
The fight, which police said involved between 70 and 100 people, occurred in the Sharon High School gymnasium with less than two minutes left in the game.
Charges: Sharon police have charged one adult in the fracas and have indicated that charges against numerous juveniles are also likely.
No one was seriously injured, but Farrell officials had complaints from a handful of residents saying that Sharon police overreacted and used too much force in restraining students.
Some Farrell students also complained to their teachers that they had been unfairly treated by police at the scene.
Those complaints prompted Farrell City Council to call for its own investigation into what happened, and Saternow and the city solicitor were directed to head the probe.
Dropped: However, Saternow said that she dropped the investigation after learning that the district attorney's office is involved in Sharon's probe.
She said she notified city council of her decision.
