Layoffs at Kent-Salem
SALEM -- State budget cuts are largely responsible for recent layoffs at Kent State University-Salem, officials there say. Four faculty members, each of whom teaches 10 courses per year, are being furloughed.
Subject areas affected are geology, computer science, education and English. The school, located in Perry Township, south of Salem, also is laying off some clerical and administrative staff.
Cops report threat
SALEM -- A 40-year-old city man was in the Columbiana County Jail this morning after being arrested this weekend after police say he was armed with a knife and threatened them. Police were called to the man's home on the 400 block of East Third Street regarding a domestic dispute about 11:50 p.m. Saturday.
Police said the man threatened to kill them. When he approached one officer, he was sprayed with pepper spray while another officer disarmed him. Police say they intend to charge the man in county municipal court with domestic violence, intimidation and disorderly conduct.
Fire damages garage
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City police are investigating the cause of a garage fire in the city's Mahoningtown section. The garage at 409 Sixth St. caught fire at about 3 p.m. Sunday.
It is owned by Caroline Wilkerson and occupied by David Coates, said Fire Chief James Donston. He estimated there was about $12,000 worth of damage to the structure.
Obesity surgery

Free screenings at fair
COLUMBIANA -- In conjunction with parent-teacher conferences, Crestview Schools and Salem Community Hospital are offering a public health fair from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday in Crestview Middle School.
The free screenings will be done in the cafeteria, including blood pressure, glucose and pulse testing.
The American Red Cross, American Heart Association and American Cancer Society will be on hand to offer information and answer questions.
Osteopath Alicia Baker, podiatrist Joseph Francisco and Dr. Angela Doty will be available to answer questions. Doty will give a presentation for Crestview fourth- and fifth-grade girls and their parents focusing on the normal physical, social and emotional changes of adolescence.

Choir to perform
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The Beatnik Cafe in the New Castle Library will feature the Second Baptist Church men's choir at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Lawrence County Chamber Players will perform at noon Feb. 13 in a program honoring Valentine's Day. Admission is free for both programs. Items honoring Black History Month are also on display in the room.
Backyard conservation
CANFIELD -- Mahoning County Solid Waste District will sponsor a program called Hidden Splendor: Uncovering Backyard Bounty, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 21 at Mahoning MetroParks Farm on state Route 46. The event is in conjunction with the SWCD's second annual backyard conservation contest and will feature information and speakers on topics such as tree planting, backyard ponds, composting and creation of backyard habitat. Reservations are required; contact the conservation district to reserve your place.
MRDD board to meet
