E-mail in the hospital
YOUNGSTOWN -- HMHP is offering in-patients the ability to receive e-mail messages through a redesigned HMpartners.org Web site. Senders can select the Send a Smile option, and the messages are then printed out and delivered by volunteers to patients during normal business hours. The service is available at St. Elizabeth and St. Joseph Health centers, Assumption Village and Humility House.
Home care help for kids
AKRON -- The Home Care Assistant Program of Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron is available to help families with the daily activities of children with special needs. Staff can provide in-home personal and custodial care for children with chronic illnesses such as autism, cerebral palsy, developmental delays, mental retardation and muscular dystrophy.
The Home Care Assistant Program serves families in several counties including Mahoning and Trumbull. Many children qualify for state assistance to cover the costs associated with the program. Call (330) 543-5000 or (800) 950-3085 for more information.

Nurse's aide training
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- St. Francis Hospital School of Allied Health, 1100 S. Mercer St., offers a Nurse Aide Training Program beginning Feb. 18. The 125-hour course includes 60 hours of classroom instruction, 25 hours of lab practice and 40 hours of clinical practice. GIRARD -- The city health department's well-child immunization clinic will start at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the City Building, 100 W. Main St. Services are free to Girard children. Parents must preregister their children by calling (330) 545-6048, and must bring a copy of their child's immunization record. A parent or guardian must accompany children under 18.
Brachy therapy
YOUNGSTOWN -- Brachy therapy, a new procedure that uses low dose radiation seeds to help keep stents open for heart patients, is now available at the Heart and Vascular Center at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Brachy therapy is used for patients suffering from in-stent restenosis, a condition in which coronary stents become clogged with new tissue growth. A stent is a mesh-like device used to retain walls of the artery after such procedures as balloon angioplasty. Until now, there has been no effective treatment for in-stent restenosis other than bypass surgery.

HERMITAGE, Pa. -- The Womancare Center of UPMC Horizon, in affiliation with Magee Women's Hospital, is offering a new technology -- computer aided detection (CAD) -- for screening mammograms. The technology provides the radiologist with additional information that helps detect cancer.
Terrorism response
CHICAGO -- The American Medical Association is offering a free online Internet program to educate practicing physicians and front-line medical professionals about responding to terrorist attacks. The program, on the Web at http://www.ama-assn.org/go/Interim20CME, features leading experts on the clinical, psychological and social effects of terrorism. Physicians need only enter their names and e-mail addresses to enter the site.
