STRUTHERS -- Alert passers-by helped get seven people safely out of a house during an attic fire Saturday morning. Jasmine Smith and her mother, Ruthann Smith, both of Liberty, who were driving by, noticed smoke coming from a 21/2-story wood house at 170 N. Bridge St. at 8:23 a.m. They stopped and knocked on the door to awaken the residents and their guests, all of whom got out safely, the fire department said.
There were no injuries in the fire, which was confined to the attic. The cause is under investigation and no damage estimate was available.
The house is owned and occupied by Stefan Barberi, his wife, and two minor daughters, and the girls had three friends visiting, for a total of five children in the house at the time of the fire.
Man dies in fire
NEGLEY -- Officials are trying to learn the identity of a man who died in a fire in a vacant house early Saturday.
Negley Fire Chief Jerry Hoon said a neighbor reported the fire at 2:59 a.m. and that the house, at 49053 Fredericktown-Clarkson Road, was engulfed in flames by the time crews arrived at the scene at 3:13 a.m.
A man's body was pulled from the rubble and was taken to East Liverpool City Hospital.
Hoon said the state fire marshal and coroner are investigating. The cause has not been determined, although a wood burner was in use even though the house was vacant, Hoon said.
The one-story, wood-frame house was a total loss, though no damage estimate was available. Hoon said the home's owner lives in Pennsylvania.
Man, 18, dies in crash
LEETONIA -- An 18-year-old student at the Columbiana County Career Center died of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident Friday morning at state Route 558 and Leetonia Road.
Travis Ryan of Grafton Road was driving an eastbound pickup truck on Route 558 and failed to stop at a stop sign, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The pickup truck was hit by a box truck driven by Lawrence Jackson, 61, of Wintersville, who was northbound on Leetonia Road at 10:45 a.m. Jackson was treated at Salem Community Hospital.
Workshop for tutors
WARREN -- The city school district is conducting a free, four-part training workshop for volunteer literacy tutors. The sessions will be from 5:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. March 12, 14, 19 and 21 in the Thomas Meeting Room at Warren-Trumbull County Public Library.
