Poland clinches MAC championship



POLAND -- David McGarry was the only Bulldog to reach double figures as the Poland High basketball team won the Metro-Athletic Conference championship Friday with a 58-43 win over Howland.
McGarry scored seven of his 17 points in the first quarter as the Bulldogs (14-2, 8-0) jumped out to a 20-8 lead. Bill Bartos and Neil Harris each scored four points in the second quarter as the Bulldogs led 32-15 at the break. Harris, Eric Fender and Bartos each scored eight points for Poland.
The Tigers are 6-11, 3-5.
Niles 87, Salem 56: NILES -- A big third quarter helped the Red Dragons (13-3, 5-3) pin a setback on the Quakers. Niles led 36-32 at the half but out-scored the Quakers 31-8 in the third quarter to take a 67-40 lead.
Dave Soda scored seven of his 19 points and Tim Rupert and Dan Jones each had six points in the session for the Red Dragons.
Tyler Spencer scored 17 points, Jones had 13 and Jason Shelton had 12 for Niles, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Travis Mong scored 14 points for the Quakers (1-15, 1-7).
Struthers 46, Canfield 41: CANFIELD -- The Wildcats' Jason Martin netted 20 points including four 3-pointers. Jim Franceshelli scored eight points for Struthers (9-8, 5-3).
Chase Booms and Chad Baker led the Cards (8-9, 3-5) with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
