MAHONING Campbell downs Chaney

The Red Devils split the season series with a 58-54 victory in non-league play.

CAMPBELL -- All nine Campbell Memorial High basketball players scored as the Red Devils defeated Chaney 58-54 to split the season series between the two schools.
Terrell Harris was the only Red Devil in double figures with 11 points. He added five assists for Campbell (8-9). Robert Armstrong and Mike Harden added nine points each for the Devils.
Roy Austin scored 20 points to lead Chaney while Keilen Dykes added 11 points and had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Cowboys (7-10).
"The first half tonight was the best we played both offensively and defensively in game this year," Campbell coach Bob Fick said.
Chris Melnik scored five points in a 14-4 run that gave Campbell the lead 18-9 after the first quarter.
The Red Devils pushed their advantage to 30-13 at halftime as Harris scored six points in the second quarter.
In the first half Campbell hit on 13 of 30 from the floor while Chaney was just 7 of 25 from the field.
"In the first half, we did not follow our game plan to get the ball inside," Chaney coach Jim Stickel said. "We did a better job in the second half. We picked it up on both ends and got the ball inside."
Battling back: Austin and Dykes combined for nine points inside and Matt Lobaugh connected on two 3-pointers as the Cowboys outscored Campbell 17-7 to cut the Red Devils' lead to 37-34 entering the last quarter.
Despite an 11-point effort by Austin in the final quarter, the Red Devils found an answer to the Chaney challenge.
First after the Cowboys closed to 37-38 on two Jason Bowlen free throws, Ricky Quinn connected on a 3-pointer from the top of the key to push the lead back to four.
Then, with the score 44-41, Campbell's Jerry Smith stole the inbound pass and scored on a traditional three-point play to push the lead back to six.
Finishing: Ali Awad connected on three free throws and baskets by Anthony Wright and Armstrong put the game away for Campbell.
"We scored just enough in the third quarter to stay ahead which was a key as we did not give up the lead," Fick said. "The two plays in the fourth quarter by Quinn and Smith, and the effort we got from guys like Harris, Wright and Smith who were sick in the locker room [were] just great tonight."
Campbell finished 23 of 49 from the field, including a 7 of 8 fourth quarter.
Chaney connected on just 18 of 53 shots from the field.
Chaney had won the first meeting 65-63 earlier in the season.
