COLUMBUS -- TaRee Glenn, a junior at Chaney High School in Youngstown, and Sean Loutzenhiser, a senior at Salem Senior High School, have won $1,000 college scholarships as finalists in the Ohio VFW Voice of Democracy program.
Glenn is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Avery of Youngstown and was sponsored by VFW Post 9947 in Cornersburg. Loutzenhiser is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Loutzenhiser of Salem and was sponsored by VFW Post 892 and its Ladies Auxiliary.
Participants submitted a tape-recorded speech on the subject, "Reaching Out to America's Future." The first place winner was Jason R. Hibner, a junior at Vandalia-Butler High School. He received a $6,000 scholarship.
Center seeks sponsorsfor dyslexic children
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Collins-Dearing Learning Center in Youngstown has launched a Sponsor a Child fund-raising campaign aimed at finding a sponsor for every dyslexic child enrolled in the program. The center at 223 Wick Ave. is part of the Scottish Rite Masonic charities.
Gifts of $10,000 will sponsor a complete two-year tutoring cycle for one child; $5,000 sponsors one child for one year. The money will fund the cost of tutoring each child and also raise community awareness of dyslexia.

Girard teen to join inleadership conference
GIRARD -- Chris McKee, a Girard High School junior, will participate in the Tavis Smiley Foundation Youth to Leader conference during President's Day weekend.
McKee was among students from throughout the country chosen to participate in the program and serve on the leadership council.
The foundation is designed to get youths involved in community concerns.
McKee, 17, son of Christopher and Ann McKee, is involved in school speech and debate and is assistant editor of the school newspaper.
Warren student partof forum in Washington
WARREN -- Nathaniel Dubasik of Warren participated in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense, Intelligence and Diplomacy in Washington, D.C. He joined more than 350 high school students from across the nation at the forum.
Master's program in Shenango Valley
ERIE, Pa. -- Gannon University is accepting applications for a new master of education program in curriculum and instruction that will be offered in the Shenango Valley. Application deadline is Feb. 22, and classes begin March 23. Twenty-four students will be accepted into the program.
