West Side culvert work receives its state funds
YOUNGSTOWN -- The second phase of a two-part project to reduce flooding on the West Side should start this spring and finish by year's end.
The city has received $1.45 million from the Ohio Public Works Commission to finish the Kirkmere Creek enclosure project.
The money was awarded in 2001 as an Issue 2 grant, but the funds weren't available last year.
It was the largest Issue 2 project in the region that year, said Carmen Conglose Jr., city deputy director of public works.
The project: Undersize pipes are being replaced with concrete culverts to reduce flooding problems.
The work should start in April and take about nine months, Conglose said.
Work will be done from Burma Drive to Kirk Road.
The first phase, which cost about $1 million, ran from Bears Den Road to Burma Drive.
