WARREN Civil Service Commission names interim fire chief

A civil service test is pending.
WARREN -- The city's new interim fire chief is Capt. Steve Williams.
He was appointed to the post Wednesday by the Civil Service Commission after the surprise retirement announcement from interim Chief Jim Nutt.
Williams takes over today.
Nutt was hired by the city in 1974 in the parks department and started with the fire department in 1981.
He has served as interim chief since June 25 after Chief Jay Mulligan left on sick leave.
Gary Cicero, personnel director, said the Civil Service Commission will give the chief's test once it becomes clear what Mulligan intends to do. Nutt was unavailable for comment.
Mayor Hank Angelo said personal reasons are behind Nutt's retirement, noting that he did a good job in the short time he led the department.
Morale improved among firefighters under Nutt, who was respected in the department, Angelo said.
Safety-Service Director Fred Harris said Williams was chosen to replace Nutt based on his 24 years on the job, six years in the Navy, a two-hour interview and recommendations from colleagues.
