CAMPBELL Council vote favors Cold Metal abatement

The company is the city's second-largest employer.
CAMPBELL -- City council endorsed a 60 percent, nine-year tax abatement Wednesday for new machinery, equipment and inventory for Cold Metal Products Co.
The abatement was to go before the Mahoning County commissioners today for approval.
The abatement is designed to create 24 jobs, which will be well-paid union positions, Mayor Jack Dill said.
City officials had been afraid the company, which now employs about 100 people and is the city's second-largest employer, might leave, but with the tax abatement and new machinery, "I think that these jobs will be safe for a long period of time." the mayor said.
The Wilson Avenue company plans to install equipment to enable it to make longer steel coils, said 4th Ward Councilman Lew Jackson Jr., who abstained from voting because he is a production supervisor at the company.
Council also appointed Dill and council President Robert P. Yankle to the tax incentive review council for the Mahoning County Enterprise Zone.
Police Chief Gus Sarigianopoulos told council he wants to schedule a meeting soon between city officials and local ambulance company executives to discuss faster response to accidents and medical emergencies.
In praise of court: In response to recent discussions concerning court reorganization in Mahoning County, law director Brian Macala said municipal court is one of the finest facilities in the area and that he would be saddened to see it abolished.
Last year, that court generated $170,000 in revenue for the city, he said, adding that only the Ohio Legislature would be empowered to abolish it.
