Crummey, Greeneselected for team
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Youngstown State senior offensive tackle Pat Crummey and senior defensive back LaVar Greene were named to the 2001 Walter Camp I-AA All-America team, which was announced recently.
Crummey was also named a first-team All-American by the American Football Coaches Association, The Associated Press and The Sports Network and an Honorable Mention All-American by the Football Gazette.
Greene was a first team pick by the Sports Network and Football Gazette and a second team pick by The Associated Press.

Mt. Union team noted for grades
ALLIANCE -- The Mount Union College soccer team has been honored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for having 17 of its 23 members earn grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher.
Sophomores Scott Gill, Brian Ruch and Matt Painting were named NSCAA second-team academic all-Ohio.
Earning honorable mention honors for the all-Midwest region were juniors Bryan Echols and Mark Edwards.
Lernerville banquet
SARVER, Pa. -- Lernerville Speedway's 34th Awards Banquet will be held on March 2 at the Days Inn on Route 8, south of Butler, Pa.
Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with a buffet at 6. The price of the banquet is $30, with free soft drinks and beer provided, and a cash bar.

Hole-in-one
COITSVILLE -- Mike Provenzale of Youngstown scored a hole-in-one at Bedford Trails golf course recently.
Provenzale aced the 135-yard No. 18 hole using a 9-iron. His shot was witnessed by Bob Rivello, Frank Kordupel, Carmen Forte and Dave Boos.

Indians sign Olivares to minor contract
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians on Tuesday signed right-handed pitcher Omar Olivares to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Olivares, 34, was 6-9 for Pittsburgh last year with a 6.55 ERA in 45 appearances.
He has a career record of 77-86 with an ERA of 4.67 in 349 appearances over 12 major league seasons. He pitched a three-hit shutout against the Indians on May 10, 1997, while with the Detroit Tigers.
Pitchers and catchers report to camp in Winter Haven, Fla., on Feb. 14.
Cincinnati extends Minter's contract
CINCINNATI -- Rick Minter, already the University of Cincinnati's longest-tenured football coach after eight seasons at the school, has agreed to a contract extension good through the 2005 season.
Minter, 47, had one year remaining on a contract that he signed in 1998. The extension grants him three additional years as head coach.
Minter led the Bearcats to a 7-5 record and a second consecutive appearance in the Motor City Bowl last season. He was hired Dec. 18, 1993, after Tim Murphy left to become Harvard's head coach.
Minter's teams are a combined 41-49-1 during his tenure at Cincinnati. He has been the head coach longer than anyone in the 114-year history of Cincinnati football.
He ranks second in coaching victories to Sid Gillman, who was 50-13-1 in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
Minter has guided the Bearcats to three of the school's six bowl appearances.

Pitcher's agecomes into question
LOS ANGELES -- Anaheim Angels right-hander Ramon Ortiz is reportedly three years older than he claims.
That means Ortiz, considered one of the team's best up-and-coming pitchers, will turn 29 on March 23, instead of 26.
The discrepancy was revealed when the U.S. consulate in his native Dominican Republic discovered the birth date in Ortiz's passport differed from that of his official birth certificate, the Los Angeles Times reported.

CICERO, Ill. -- Chicago Motor Speedway officials suspended the track's 2002 racing schedule, citing business and economic conditions in the industry.
The schedule includes the CART FedEx Series' Target Grand Prix and the Sears Craftsman 175 in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
Frazier files suit
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Joe Frazier is suing the Oneida Indian Nation for $16 million, claiming the tribe's Turning Stone Casino used his image without permission to promote his daughter's fight against Muhammad Ali's daughter last year.
