GROVE CITY Authorities investigate fire that killed man

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Authorities say they don't know what caused a fire that killed a Center Street man and sent his mother to the hospital.
Jason Allen Gladd, 21, of 635 S. Center St., died of smoke inhalation in the fire that severely damaged the second- and third-floor apartment he shared with his mother, Teresa A. Donahey, 51, firefighters said.
It was Donahey who escaped the blaze and alerted her first-floor neighbors around 2:35 a.m. Monday, said Jeff Badger, assistant Grove City fire chief.
Gladd apparently was able to make it out of his third-floor bedroom, but he got only as far as the stairway landing before collapsing. That's where he was found about an hour later.
Dr. David Hoyt, Mercer County deputy coroner, attributed the death to smoke inhalation.
Donahey suffered burns and was admitted in serious condition to the burn unit at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.
There were no smoke detectors found in the apartment shared by Gladd and Donahey, Badger said.
A Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal inspecting the scene was unable to pinpoint the cause of the blaze and ruled it as undetermined at this time, he said. The blaze wasn't suspicious, Badger said.
The house had been a single residence at one time but had been converted into a duplex, he added.
The fire gutted the third floor and did extensive damage to the second floor, Badger said. There was water damage to the first-floor apartment occupied by Trisha Seelbaugh and her daughter, he said.
Firefighters from Pine Township, Mercer East End, Springfield Township and Harrisville volunteer fire departments assisted Grove City at the scene.
