BETHANY WINS STATEN ISLAND TOURNAMENT
BETHANY WINS STATEN ISLAND TOURNAMENT
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Senior guard Mike Majzun of Youngstown, Ohio,
scored 31 points to lead four scorers in double figures as the Bethany
College mens basketball team (5-6) won the College of Staten Island
Tournament Sunday with an 89-83 victory over Kings Point (6-3).
The win was Bethanys third in a row and their fifth in the last six
games following a 0-5 start in Head Coach Aaron Huffmans first season.
Bethany wasted little time in jumping on the Mariners, racing out to a
13-3 lead as all five starters hit the scorebooks in the opening 3:18.
The Bison carried a 44-37 lead into halftime behind 18 points from
Majzun and 56 percent (5-9) shooting as a team from behind the arc.
In the second half, Bethany opened their lead to 61-46 with 12 minutes
to play, but the Mariners would answer with a 16-5 run over the next six
minutes to slice the Bethany lead to four at 66-62.
But Kings Point would get no closer. The Green and White came back with
a 10-3 spurt that pushed their lead back to double figures and put the
game out of reach. Majzun went 5-5 from the foul line in the final
minute to ice the win.
In scoring the second-highest total of his career, Majzun went 8-13 from
the floor and a perfect 12-12 from the charity stripe. Senior center
Derek Hoffman of St. Clairsville, Ohio, posted his second double-double
of the Tournament with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman point guard
Josh Polantz of Johnstown, Pa., also had an outstanding game, amassing
17 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals. Rounding out
the double digit scorers was freshman forward Mike Drahos of Wheeling,
W.Va., with 10.
Kings Point was led by Josh Buck with 19 points.
The Bison are now off until January 4, when they will host LaRoche (Pa.)
College at Hummel Field House. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
