2002 was significant for the rise of Ohio State football and the fall of the Steel Valley Conference. The Mooney High boys soccer team won the state title and Mi Hyun Kim reigned at the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic. It was a year in which Indians fans were disheartened by the departure of slugger Jim Thome.
July 21 -- Mi Hyun Kim of South Korea shot a 14-under-par 202 to win the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic at Squaw Creek Country Club in Vienna. Kim beat Kelly Robbins by one stroke.
Oct. 27 -- The Anaheim Angels clinched their first World Series championship with a 4-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants in Game 7.
Nov. 30 -- The Warren Harding High football team loses to Cincinnati Elder 21-19 in the Division I state championship game on a snow-covered field at Fawcett Stadium in Canton.
