GETTING THERE
Flights are available to Pensacola on Delta, AirTran, Continental, US Airways and several commuter airlines. Fort Walton Beach and Destin are served by Delta, Northwest and commuters at Eglin Air Force Base. Four commuter airlines serve Panama City.
LODGING
Everything from mom-and-pop motels to condominiums and posh resorts are available, often at substantial discounts in the winter months. Local tourism agencies can help find accommodations to suit your budget and needs.
DINING
Seafood is a regional specialty epitomized by Captain Anderson's Restaurant on Panama City's waterfront.
McGuire's Irish Pub in Pensacola and Destin offers steaks, fish and chips, corned beef and cabbage, beer brewed onsite and a greenback decor -- thousands of dollar bills customers have stapled to the walls and ceilings.
Another Pensacola favorite is Hopkins Boarding House, where fried chicken, sweet potato souffl & eacute; and other Southern specialties are served family style.
Criolla's at Grayton Beach offers a tropical-Caribbean-Creole blend and annually ranks as one of Florida's best restaurants.
ATTRACTIONS
The National Museum of Naval Aviation at Pensacola Naval Air Station is filled with dozens of historic aircraft, including World War II fighters and dive bombers salvaged from the bottom of Lake Michigan. Aircraft, missiles and other weaponry can be found at the Air Force Armament Museum at Eglin Air Force Base near Fort Walton Beach.
The Gulf Islands National Seashore includes miles of pristine sugar-white beaches and Civil War-era forts in the Pensacola area.
Pensacola's historic district includes museums and vintage buildings open for tours.
Seaside in Walton County, where the movie "The Truman Show" was filmed, is a "new urbanism" community of shops, galleries and closely spaced pastel-colored homes featuring front porches, picket fences and tin roofs.
