Howland waltzes to championship
BROOKFIELD -- The Howland High girls basketball team improved to 9-0 with a 64-35 romp over Farrell Saturday to win the Brookfield Holiday Tournament.
Senior point guard Darcy Quinlan led the Tigers with 24 points. Kristina Ferenac netted 16.
For Farrell (6-2), Kelly Davis scored 16 points.
Brookfield 59, Sharon 50
BROOKFIELD -- Raquel Brenner scored 12 points to lead the Warriors (6-4) in the foul-plagued consolation game that saw 64 free-throw attempts.
Kaitlyn Nasci and Rachel Pasquerilla each scored 11 for Brookfield while Holly DeMay had 10.
Nicole Valentino netted five 3-pointers to finish with 31 points for Sharon (6-6).
Canfield 67, Niles 30
NILES -- Jill Vertanen scored a game-high 21 points and Corey Hoffman added 13 points and seven rebounds for Canfield (3-4, 1-1 Metro Athletic Conference).
Kelly Williams added 12 points for the Cardinals, who held a 35-10 halftime lead.
Taura Mitchell scored nine points and grabbed nine rebounds for Niles (4-4, 0-2) and Stacia Ray added nine points.
Mooney 51, Maplewood 25
CORTLAND -- Aieshya Dixon and Anastasia Vouvalis each scored 10 points as the Cardinals improved to 7-1. Dixon also had 13 of her team's 40 rebounds.
Amber Brodrick netted nine points, Carla Fedina had eight and Megan Maloney had seven for Mooney, which outscored the Rockets 19-2 in the second quarter.
The victory was Mooney's fifth straight since losing to Boardman.
For Maplewood (5-4), Jennifer Bell had eight points while Laura Finch grabbed nine of her team's 28 rebounds.
Columbiana 51, Springfield 42
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Stevie Goist scored 14 points and five steals and Lisa Simon added 11 points, seven rebounds and five blocks to lead Columbiana (7-1).
Whitney Goist added 11 points for the Clippers.
Lindsay Johnson had 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Leetonia 74, Jackson-Milton 36
NORTH JACKSON -- Jess Deville scored 25 points as Leetonia cruised past Jackson-Milton.
Marci Mancuso scored 18 and Bri Duko added 11 for the Bears (4-4).
Sarah Johnson scored 13 to lead Jackson-Milton (1-6).
Crestview 58, Beaver Local 49
LISBON -- The Rebels outscored the Beavers 16-5 in the third quarter to improve to 7-1.
Katie Kestner and Katie Kibby led Crestview with 22 and 20 points, respectively.
For Beaver Local (5-3), Sarah McCoy and Rachel McCoy each scored 12 points.
Aliquippa 63, Campbell 51
ALIQUIPPA, Pa. -- Jeanika Council scored 19 points and Olivia Benson added 15 for Aliquippa (4-6).
Tierra McIntosh led Campbell (0-10) with 21 points.
Struthers 49, Fitch 35
AUSTINTOWN -- Kristy Marapese scored 21 points and Melissa Shipley added eight points and six rebounds as Struthers defeated Fitch earlier this week.
