VINDICATOR ALL-STARS Player profiles

The following athletes and coach were inadvertantly omitted from the all-star biographies that were published:
GIRLS GOLFMEGAN YANIK
School/grade: Boardman, senior
Statistics/accomplishments: First team all-Steel Valley Conference on Division I state qualifying team.
Name a person who has been a positive influence in your athletic career: My parents. They got me started when I was 11 as a hobby and it turned out to be my life throughout high school. They raised me to have a good work ethic and to be respectful, which helped me with golf.
Best memory from this season: Qualifying for state as a team. We had so much fun.
Something people don't know about you or would be surprised to learn: I plan on majoring in mechanical engineering in college.
COACH OF THE YEAR
GARY KONYA
School: Boardman
Statistics/accomplishments: Spartans finished 30-1 during the regular season and 68-14 overall. Won ninth straight SVC title, finished first at sectional meet, third at district meet and 11th at state tournament. Placed three Spartans on all-conference first team and one on second team. Senior class finished with 71-1 SVC record and was 211-48 overall.
Positive influence: My father, Louis Konya, who was a coach (mainly football) for 25 years at Campbell. I grew up watching him work and he had a lot do with the development of some of Campbell's greatest football players. He taught me how to work with athletes and get them to believe in themselves. He always got the most out of the players he dealt with and I like to feel I too get the most out of my players. I learned how to coach girls by coaching my own daughters, Meredith and Candice. From them I learned what to expect from girls that wanted to be outstanding athletes.
Best memory: I let the girls know at the start of the season exactly what I thought we could accomplish, and that is just how we finished. Not many people thought we were going to be a strong team and, as the season progressed, we were still not thought of as a contender. When we finished No. 1 in the sectional tournament, I knew that we were now where we belonged. The girls started believing in their ability and we did well the rest of the tournament season. I felt that we could have finished a few places higher at state, but that's the game of golf.
Surprised to learn: I'm a rather good cook and I enjoy making just about everything. I spend a lot of my free time in the kitchen. You name it, I'll make it -- or at least give it a try.
BOYS SOCCER
ALEX SIMON
School/grade: Mooney, senior
Statistics/accomplishments: First team all-SVC, all-district; second-team all-state; member of Division II state championship team; 2001 Vindicator player of the year.
Positive influence: My dad, both as a coach and a parent.
Best memory: The state semifinal in which we came back from one goal down to win. I remember how great it felt when the game was over.
Surprised to learn: I'm getting a haircut.
FOOTBALL
TIM DEWBERRY
School/grade: Canfield, senior
Statistics/accomplishments: Averaged 8 yards per carry; team's leading rusher; recorded 67 tackles -- second-most on the team.
Positive influence: My grandfather, Bob Dove, because he is football and he knows the game.
Best memory: A tie between beating Metro Athletic Conference rival Poland going 10-0 for the first time in school history.
Surprised to learn: I moved schools for a better education and found myself on the best football team in the area.
