MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE St. Bonaventure snaps Kent State's winning streak
The Golden Flashes had won 21 straight regular season games.
OLEAN, N.Y. -- Marques Green scored 23 points and had 13 assists to lead St. Bonaventure to a 93-80 victory over Kent State on Saturday, ending the Golden Flashes' 21-game regular season winning streak.
The Bonnies (4-5) went on a 14-0 run with four straight 3-pointers in the second half with 15:08 remaining to take a 65-40 lead.
St. Bonaventure's Patricio Prato scored 22 points and Mike Gansey added 19 points and shot 5-for-8 on 3-pointers. The Bonnies made 8 of 19 3-pointers, including 4 of 8 in the first half.
Antonio Gates led the Golden Flashes (6-1) with 22 points and six assists. Eric Haut and Matt Jakeway each scored 11 points. Kent State made 12 of 26 3-pointers, including 7 of 13 in the first half.
Akron 97, Radford 64
AKRON -- John Hollingsworth scored 23 points and Darryl Peterson and Derrick Tarver each had 17 points for Akron.
Hollingsworth made 7-of-14 shots from the field and 9-of-12 free throws for Akron (4-4). He also had seven rebounds, six steals and six assists.
Peterson scored 9 points in a 12-4 run over the last 2:46 of the first half to give Akron a 36-19 halftime lead. Radford made just 2-of-21 shots from the field in the first half.
Raymond Arrington led Radford (2-6) with 23 points and Whit Holcomb-Faye scored 20 points.
The Highlanders shot 13-of-55 from the field (24 percent) for the game, including 5-of-22 3-pointers (23 percent), compared with Akron which made 35-of-63 shots from the field (56 percent).
W. Michigan 75, Virginia Tech 54
KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Mike Williams scored 18 points to lead four Western Michigan players in double figures.
Western (7-2), which has won its past three games by an average of 20 points, never trailed in handing the Hokies (5-5) their most lopsided loss of the season. It was the seventh straight non-league win for the Broncos, who are off to their best start in nine years.
Hitting seven of its first 12 shots, Western took a 17-7 lead eight minutes into the game and cruised from there. Two consecutive 3-point baskets by Robby Collum helped fuel a 20-2 run that gave the Broncos a 33-9 advantage with 3:48 left in the first half.
Virginia Tech scored just two baskets against the nation's fourth-best defense over a 13-minute span in the first half.
Tech's Allan Calloway slammed home a basket to cut Western's lead to 12 early in the second half, but the Broncos responded with a 15-2 run that put them up 55-30 with 11:43 left.
Dimari Thompkins and Brian Chase each scored 10 points for Virginia Tech. A snowstorm canceled the Hokies' flight out of Chicago on Friday night, and they didn't arrive in Kalamazoo until 2 a.m. Saturday after a three-hour bus ride.
Collum finished with 16 points and six assists.
N. Illinois 72, Illinois St. 65
NORMAL, Ill. -- Todd Peterson scored 18 points and Jay Bates added 17 for Northern Illinois.
Peterson scored all of his points on 6-of-10 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc to pace Northern (4-5). The Huskies had a 31-24 lead at the half.
P.J. Smith scored 16 points, nine from the 3-point range. Marcus Smallwood lead all players with 12 boards as Northern outrebounded Illinois State 38-30.
Trey Guidry led the Redbirds (1-7) with a game-high 19 points and Vince Greene added 16 points.
Both teams shot 41 percent from the field, but the Huskies were more effective from the 3-point arc with 55 percent shooting , compared to 36 percent for Illinois State.
The two teams each had trouble controlling the ball. The Redbirds committed 18 turnovers while the Huskies had 17 miscues.
