EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Jeff Friesen scored the go-ahead goal on a giveaway by Dallas goaltender Marty Turco and John Madden scored twice to lead New Jersey. Former Star Jamie Langenbrunner added a goal and two assists in his first game against his former teammates. Oleg Tverdovsky also scored as the Devils matched their season high for goals. Bill Guerin scored twice and Manny Malhotra once for the Dallas, which had 25 shots at Martin Brodeur. The five goals allowed tied the most given up by the Stars in a game this season.

PHILADELPHIA -- Peter Schaefer scored a tiebreaking goal 7:30 into the third period to help Ottawa snap Philadelphia's five-game unbeaten streak. Schaefer, left uncovered in the slot, walked in and beat Philadelphia goaltender Roman Cechmanek as the Senators won their third straight game and seventh in their last eight. Philadelphia's Michal Handzus had tied the game 2:54 into the period. Mike Fisher and Wade Redden also scored for the Senators, who have lost only two of their last 20 games (15-2-3).

DETROIT -- Nicklas Lidstrom and Igor Larionov each had a goal and an assist in Detroit's victory. The defending Stanley Cup champions have lost once in 10 games (6-1-3-0), while New York has won just once in eight games (1-6-0-1). It was Detroit's seventh straight victory over the Rangers, and the Red Wings have a 35-10 scoring advantage in those games. New York's last victory over Detroit was Jan. 20, 1999. Brendan Shanahan scored the other Red Wings goal, and Sergei Fedorov had two assists. Vladimir Malakhov scored twice for the Rangers, the defenseman's first two goals this season. Malakhov's first goal, 1:25 into the second, brought New York within 2-1. Detroit regained its two-goal lead 3:30 into the third period on Shanahan's power-play goal. It was Shanahan's 12th goal of the season and came with Tom Poti in the penalty box for holding.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tomas Vokoun made 40 saves, including 16 in the third period, to lead Nashville. Denis Arkhipov put the Predators up 1-0 with his first goal in 21 games at 5:59 of the first period. The Lightning tied it at 1 just 38 seconds later on Vincent Lecavalier's power-play goal. Tampa Bay went ahead 2-1 at 16:53 when Dan Boyle scored from the right circle. Nashville drew even at 2 on Denis Pederson's second-period goal at 4:52.
Canadiens 6, Sabres 2
MONTREAL -- Doug Gilmour scored twice, and Yanic Perreault and Saku Koivu each had a goal and two assists to lead Montreal. Richard Zednik and Chad Kilger also scored for Montreal, which won its second straight, and sixth in eight. Montreal scored three times on four shots in the second period against Mika Noronen, who took over from Martin Biron after the Canadiens scored twice on six shots in the first. Jose Theodore made 36 saves for Montreal, allowing Adam Mair's goal with 3:14 left in the second -- 44 seconds after Zednik put the Canadiens up 5-0 -- and Miroslav Satan's power-play goal with 1:58 left in the third.
Capitals 3, Islanders 1
UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Michael Nylander scored the tying goal, missed a penalty shot, and then put Washington in front -- all in the third period. Kip Miller sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 9.9 seconds remaining. Nylander was awarded a penalty shot when New York goalie Rick DiPietro threw his stick at the puck with 8:27 remaining. DiPietro finished with 31 saves. Washington goalie Olaf Kolzig faced only 18 shots, with Mattias Weinhandl the only one to beat him.
Bruins 3, Panthers 3
BOSTON -- Ivan Novoseltsev and Viktor Kozlov each scored with less than a minute to play as Florida escaped. Kozlov's power-play goal with 51.3 seconds remaining cut it to 3-2. With Florida's goaltender pulled for an extra skater, Olli Jokinen tried a wraparound shot that goaltender John Grahame made a pad save on. But Novoseltsev poked the puck in for the tying score with 1.4 seconds to play. Stephen Weiss had Florida's other goal. Joe Thornton had a pair of first-period goals and Rob Zamuner also scored for Boston.
Sharks 3, Maple Leafs 3
TORONTO -- Tomas Kaberle and Mats Sundin scored power-play goals in the third period as Toronto rallied for the tie. Marco Sturm, Jonathan Cheechoo and Dan McGillis scored for the Sharks, who blew a 3-1 third period lead. San Jose's Teemu Selanne had a breakaway in overtime, but Toronto goalie Ed Belfour made a sprawling save to preserve the tie. Belfour made 26 saves for the Maple Leafs. Evgeni Nabokov made 23 saves after surrendering four goals on nine shots in Thursday's loss.
