BOARDMAN 2 police officers plan to retire

Trustees also approved purchases for the fire and police departments.
BOARDMAN -- Township police are saying goodbye to longtime officers and will soon welcome in new patrolmen.
Trustees accepted the retirement/resignation Monday night of Lt. Jefferson D. Heaver and Sgt. Kenneth J. Madeline. With the retirement of the two officers, the department will be losing more than five decades of police experience.
Madeline and Heaver have been placed on reserve commission status.
Trustees also promoted Sgt. Donald P. Lamping to lieutenant. Patrolmen Paul L. Grimes and Richard J. Balog have been promoted to sergeant.
Trustees will hire eight incoming patrolmen later this month.
"I hope this will be it in the changing of our ranking officers for a while," Chief Jeffrey Patterson told trustees. "There have been about 12 out of 18 in the last several years because of large amount of hiring in the '70s."
