It's a moral foundation and a source of hope

Throughout the ages, humankind has wondered how it came into being and why it exists. From its earliest days, religion has supplied the answers to these questions. It provides a standard to live by and a hope in the future. Religion means much to humankind, and it is a beneficial part of the world.
Joevania Jean-Jacque, a sophomore at South Plantation High School, said, "Religion gives us certain standards to live by, and it guides us in life."
Many of our concepts of what is right and wrong come from the morals that religion teaches. Kindness, mercy, giving to the poor, honesty -- all of these ideals have become a part of the world and are seen as morals that society feels should be upheld.
Some religious ideals have been integrated into our laws. Stealing, murder and perjury are religious taboos that have been made legal crimes, and they lead to legal consequences.
Hope of better times
Religion also provides people with a hope for a better future. Considering what has been happening in the world during the past year or so, the future can seem to hold only sorrow and misery. Many people might feel their hope for the future fading.
Many religions, however, teach that the future will hold greater times than the present. Some religions tell of a time when misery will eventually be gone from this world, leaving a world of joy and happiness. People can place their hope in the belief that the future will not hold misery and sorrow, but joy and happiness for them. With this belief, many feel hope even in troubled times.
The good of religion is evident. Without it, the world would be a chaotic and miserable place.
