PREP BASKETBALL Fitch Falcons cruise by Struthers
The Falcons are now 5-0, same as Cardinal Mooney, a 50-38 winner over Wilson.
AUSTINTOWN -- Greg Mayes, a 6-foot-7 senior, collected 22 points and 23 rebounds to help the Fitch High boys basketball team register a 62-47 win over Struthers on Tuesday.
Mark Aikens hit eight of his 14 points in the first quarter as the Falcons (5-0) led 17-2 after eight minutes and 34-15 at the break.
Eric Rusu made four 3-point goals and finished with 12 points for the Wildcats (1-4).
Cardinal Mooney 50, Wilson 38
YOUNGSTOWN -- The host Cardinals (5-0) remained unbeaten by dealing a setback to Wilson (1-3).
Curtis Ingram and Jeff Hehr led Mooney's attack with 14 points each, while David Zidian added 12.
Wilson was led by Randall Poindexter with 15 points.
Ursuline 62, Chaney 56
YOUNGSTOWN -- Ursuline outscored Chaney 16-9 in the fourth quarter for the victory.
Isaiah Poindexter poured in 24 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the Irish (2-4). Daryll Clark added 12 points.
For Chaney (2-3), Chance Peay scored 17 points and Chris Childers 13. Childers added five steals, and Idris ElAmin had four blocks for the Cowboys.
Ursuline won the battle of the boards 50-24 but committed 34 turnovers to Chaney's 17.
West Branch 58, Carrollton 54 (OT)
BELOIT -- Josh Venables scored six of his 13 points in the extra session for West Branch (2-3).
The Warriors shot 21-for-29 from the foul line. Robert Stull also had 13 points for West Branch in the Northeastern Buckeye Conference game.
Summit Academy 66,Compass Education Center 30
YOUNGSTOWN -- Loyd Packer fired in 25 points for Summit.
Compass fell behind 19-8 after one quarter and faced a 35-18 deficit by intermission.
Matt Carnes scored 13 points and pulled in eight rebounds for Compass (1-5).
Tri-State Christian 62, Youngstown Christian 53
YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Mike Vitullo had 30 points and 12 rebounds, but Youngstown Christian (1-3) fell to Tri-State Christian. Phil Hawley poured in 38 points for Tri-State (10-1).
Farrell 54, Mohawk 47
BESSEMER, Pa. -- Lionel Spinson fired in 16 points and he was supported by Bryan Dungee with 13 points for the Steelers (5-1).
It was the Section Two, Class AA opener for both teams.
Shawn Carr collected 17 points and four rebounds, while Chris Kwolek had 12 points and seven rebounds for Mohawk (4-3).

AUSTINTOWN -- Kelly Williams led a balanced attack with 12 points as the Canfield High girls basketball team defeated Austintown Fitch 68-26 Monday.
Ten players scored for Canfield.
Danielle Storey paced Fitch with seven points.
