NCAA DIVISION III PLAYOFFS Trinity's quarterback is arrested for public intoxication after game
Trinity will play Mount Union Saturday in the Stagg Bowl for the NCAA Division III championship.
SAN ANTONIO -- Just hours after leading Trinity University into its first NCAA Division III national title game, quarterback Roy Hampton was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with public intoxication, according to reports in the San Antonio Express News.
Trinity officials did not rule Monday whether Hampton would be disciplined.
"The university continues to investigate the events and facts surrounding the incident," an athletic department official said.
Trinity coach Steve Mohr declined to comment Monday on the situation or possible punishment.
"We'll wait to see what the university has to say," Mohr said.
The situation
Hampton, who has retained an attorney, was arrested hours after leading Trinity to its first NCAA Division III semifinal playoff win and a berth in the Stagg Bowl.
According to a police report, Hampton, 23, was arrested at midnight Saturday on the River Walk, a popular nightspot here, and booked on public intoxication charges at 1:21 a.m. Sunday.
The magistrate's office said that Hampton met with a judge at 6:30 a.m. and was released on time served without bond at 7:09 a.m.
In Saturday's 41-34 victory over St. John's (Minn.), Hampton, the 2002 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and South Region Offensive Player of the Year, passed for 171 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning 4-yard run.
Trinity (14-0) is scheduled to depart Thursday for Salem, Va., where it will face Mount Union Saturday in the title game.
Suspended, reinstated
Last season, Hampton and three others were accused of breaking into a student's off-campus apartment. Trinity officials initially suspended Hampton for one year, but after reviewing the case, Hampton and the others were reinstated and given the option to resume classes.
The three others transferred and Hampton, an All-America pick last season, re-enrolled in August.
Hampton, an All-America pick last year, has led the Tigers to a 14-0 season. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and South Region Offensive Player of the Year leads the nation in pass efficiency (184.86), has 43 touchdown passes and has thrown for more than 4,000 yards.
