YOUNGSTOWN -- A Wooster man died Saturday when his car left the Himrod Avenue Expressway at Albert Street, failed to make the turn and struck the curb, which sent the car airborne, police said. The car, driven by Jon M. Jones, 34, of Wooster, came down nose first and tumbled, police said. The impact ejected Jones.

Drug, traffic charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Robert Jackson's driver's license expired in March 2000, the plates on the car he was driving were fictitious, he had suspected crack cocaine packaged for sale and a cigar filled with suspected marijuana, police said they discovered early today when they stopped him on Lakewood Avenue. Jackson, 32, of Willow Crest Avenue, Austintown, was pulled over around 2:45 a.m. after failing to signal two turns on the South Side, police said. He was arrested on drug and traffic charges, and his car was towed.
Chase ends in arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- The pursuit of a stolen car Sunday night on the South Side ended with a foot pursuit and arrest of the driver. Randall P. Vecchio, 37, of Powersdale Avenue, jumped out of the 1989 Oldsmobile on Granite Avenue and ran through rear yards and across High Street, where he stumbled and fell in the Subway sandwich shop parking lot around 11 p.m., reports show.
Vecchio, who struck his head on a concrete parking barrier, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment. He faces charges of receiving stolen property and having fictitious plates. The plates that belong on the Oldsmobile were found in the back seat of the car, police said.
Head-on collision
WARREN -- The westbound lane of state Route 5/82 was closed this morning after a head-on collision around 7:15 a.m. A helicopter ambulance took one person injured in the crash to Cleveland MetroHealth Medical Center. Another person was take by ambulance to Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital, a dispatcher for the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
The names and conditions of those injured were not immediately available. The accident took place when a vehicle traveling east on state Route 5/82 crossed the median and struck a westbound vehicle.
Rape investigation
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that a 14-year-old girl was raped by a 14-year-old boy in a township apartment Saturday night. The girl and one of her friends had gone to the apartment to visit the boy around 10:45 p.m. They had expected several other people to be there. When they arrived, however, only the boy and one of his friends were there.
The girl said the boy pushed her into a room in the apartment, locked the door and raped her.
Reports do not state what the boy's friend did or if any adults were in the apartment. The girl's friend said she pounded on the door when she heard the girl yell "no!" The boy told the girl's friend that he did not rape the girl.
Vandalism reports
AUSTINTOWN -- Police are investigating a report that someone shot at an inflatable "Frosty the Snowman" decoration on a South Warwick Avenue lawn Sunday, missed and instead hit a window. Police believe the window was damaged with a BB. They also are investigating reports that a BB gun was used to damage a bus windshield on Kirk Road on Sunday and a minivan window on Mahoning Avenue on Thursday.
DUI, weapon charges
CANFIELD -- Police said they found a knife sheathed in the driver's side door of a car driven by a North Jackson man early Saturday. Robert Shank, 21, of New Road, is charged by police with carrying a concealed weapon, driving under the influence and driving under suspension. Reports state that the knife was "ready at hand." Police said they stopped Shank for speeding and driving over the center line around 3 a.m. on Herbert Road. He had a blood-alcohol level of 0.128 percent. Police found the knife when they searched the car after arresting Shank.
