Kent State center has shoulder injury
KENT -- Nate Gerwig, the starting center on Kent State's undefeated basketball team, could miss several games with a shoulder injury, a university spokesman said Sunday.
The Golden Flashes will know more about his injury after he is examined Monday, spokesman Will Roleson said.
Gerwig and Antonio Gates each scored 20 points as Kent State stayed undefeated through five games by dominating Cleveland State 91-68 Saturday night. Gerwig suffered what appeared to be a dislocated shoulder early in the second half, Roleson said.
Gerwig, a 6-foot-9 sophomore, was part of a Kent State team that advanced to the final eight in the NCAA tournament last season. He has averaged 11.6 points this season.
Hal McCoy wins Spink Award
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News won the J.G. Taylor Spink Award on Sunday and will be inducted into the writers' wing of the baseball Hall of Fame next summer.
The 62-year-old McCoy has covered the Cincinnati Reds for 32 years, the longest tenure of any current beat writer on one team.
McCoy was at the forefront of the Pete Rose gambling investigation, breaking many stories during the 1989 season. He also broke numerous stories while Marge Schott was owner. He was banned from the media dining room four times for writing "uncomplimentary" stories about the team.
The award is voted on annually by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. In the first time the BBWAA conducted mail voting, McCoy received 171 of 428 votes. Murray Chass of The New York Times got 146 votes and Peter Gammons of The Boston Globe received 111.
Commissionerto investigate
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The commissioner's office will investigate whether the Cincinnati Reds tampered last month when manager Bob Boone talked to San Diego's Phil Nevin over a possible trade.
San Diego and Cincinnati worked out a tentative deal that would have sent Ken Griffey Jr. to the Padres for Nevin, and Boone talked to Nevin in an effort to convince him to accept the trade. Nevin, however, used his no-trade clause to squash the proposed swap.
"It's something we're looking into," Sandy Alderson, executive vice president for baseball operations in the commissioner's office, said Sunday. "Someone in the commissioner's office will talk to the Reds. I don't consider this major."
Alderson said that the most that is likely to happen is that a letter would be sent to Cincinnati. No penalty beyond that is likely.
