Power is restored
BOARDMAN -- Power was restored at 2:30 a.m. today after being out for 81/2 hours in the busy shopping corridor that rings U.S. Route 224.
The outage happened when David Cattler, 38, of Valley View, Ohio, rammed his 2000 Ford Excursion into a utility pole at Southern Boulevard and Route 224, said a spokesman for the Canfield post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Cattler's vehicle went into a ditch around 4:50 p.m. Sunday after striking the pole, which broke and fell atop the vehicle, the patrol said. Cattler's blood-alcohol content registered 0.259, the patrol said. The legal limit is 0.10.
Cattler was cited on a charge of failure to control and was to be charged with DUI when he appeared in Mahoning County Court today. Boardman police said power was out for everyone on Route 224 from South Avenue to Market Street. Even shoppers trying to get money from ATMs in the area were out of luck.
Drug, traffic charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Robert Jackson's driver's license expired in March 2000, the plates on the car he was driving were fictitious, he had suspected crack cocaine packaged for sale and a cigar filled with suspected marijuana, police said they discovered early today when they stopped him on Lakewood Avenue.
Jackson, 32, of Willow Crest Avenue, Austintown, was pulled over around 2:45 a.m. after failing to signal two turns on the South Side, police said. He was arrested on drug and traffic charges, and his car was towed.
Chase ends in arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- The pursuit of a stolen car Sunday night on the South Side ended with a foot pursuit and arrest of the driver. Randall P. Vecchio, 37, of Powersdale Avenue, jumped out of the 1989 Oldsmobile on Granite Avenue and ran through rear yards, with police in pursuit, across High Street, where he stumbled and fell in the Subway sandwich shop parking lot around 11 p.m., reports show.
Vecchio, who struck his head on a cement parking barrier, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment. He faces charges of receiving stolen property and having fictitious plates. The plates that belong on the Oldsmobile were found in the back seat of the car, police said.
