W.Kentucky gets to first title game



The Hilltoppers of the Gateway Conference will meet McNeese State for the I-AA national championships.

STATESBORO, Ga. -- Western Kentucky quarterback Jason Michael scored on a 2-yard run with 46 seconds remaining to lead the Hilltoppers into the Division I-AA championship game for the first time with a 31-28 victory over Georgia Southern on Saturday.
Georgia Southern (11-3), which had won 10 straight, was trying to win its seventh national title since 1997.
The Eagles rallied from a 17-point fourth-quarter deficit to take a 28-24 lead, but Western Kentucky went on a 76-yard drive, capped by Michael's game-winning run.
Michael finished with 38 yards rushing and two TDs; he completed 9 of 15 passes for 149 yards.
Georgia Southern quarterback Chaz Williams, who set a I-AA record with 10 straight 100-yard rushing games, was held to 19 yards. He was 9-of-18 passing for 160 yards.
Jon Frazier ran for 103 yards and two TDs for the Hilltoppers, including a 2-yard second-quarter run that finished a 98-yard, 14-play drive.
McNeese St. 39, Villanova 28
LAKE CHARLES, La. -- B.J. Sams scored two touchdowns as McNeese State rallied from a two-touchdown deficit.
Sams put the Cowboys ahead 26-21 in the fourth quarter when he caught a pass, broke three tackles and went 69 yards for the score. He also ran for a 5-yard TD in the third quarter. He finished with 47 yards rushing and caught three passes for 90 yards.
Brett Gordon completed 24-of-49 passes for 354 yards and two touchdowns for Villanova (11-4) despite playing with a broken thumb.
The Wildcats led 21-7 at halftime before McNeese scored 26 straight points. After Sams' touchdown catch, Jermaine Martin scored on a 36-yard reverse to make it 33-21.
Villanova's Phil DiGiacomo scored on a 6-yard run with 7:43 remaining to cut the Cowboys' lead to 33-28, but Jacob Prim sealed the win for McNeese when he scored on a 14-yard run in the final seconds.
Grand Valley St. 31, Valdosta St. 24
FLORENCE, Ala. -- Curt Anes threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to David Kircus with 1:04 remaining to give Grand Valley (Mich.) State its first NCAA Div. II title.
Kircus caught 11 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns, extending his all-division record for TD receptions in a season to 35.
Anes, who won the Harlon Hill Trophy as the best player in Div. II on Friday, completed 23-of-36 passes for 361 yards for the Lakers (14-0).
Trinity 41, St. John's, Minn. 34
SAN ANTONIO -- Roy Hampton's 4-yard run with 2:18 left remaining Trinity (14-0) into the NCAA Division III championship game.
Hampton also completed 16-of-26 passes for 171 yards and a touchdown, and he ran for 89 yards.
Kent Crowley ran for 155 yards and two touchdowns for St. John's (12-2). Blake Elliott caught 15 passes for 155 yards and three TDs.
The Johnnies, who gave coach John Gagliardi his 400th career win with a quarterfinal victory over Linfield, scored 21 straight points in the second half and tied it 34-34 when Ross Denne threw a 7-yard touchdown to Elliott with 9:57 remaining.
Denne completed 21-of-43 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns.
