Nine debutantes presented at Junior Civic League event



Three participants also received honors.
BOARDMAN -- "A Mystical Affair" provided the theme for the 47th annual Cinderella Ball held Nov. 29 at Mr. Anthony's as nine debutantes were presented by the Junior Civic League.
Highlighting the evening was the crowning of one of the debutantes, Amber E. Williams, as "Miss Cinderella."
Amber is the daughter of Candace Williams and Nate Little. Presented by her father, the Ursuline High School student was escorted by Marcus Rutledge. Her school and community activities are flag-line captain, track stats, Key Club, Youngstown Playhouse and Harambee Youth Organization. Amber was named to Who's Who Among American High School Students for two years, Ohio State Young Scholars Program and National Honor Roll. She plans to major in education at Ohio State University, and her goal is a career in elementary education.
The other debutantes are:
U Terria Dominique Brown, daughter of Terrell and Denese Hurt, was named first runner-up. She was presented by her father and escorted by Dominick L. Brown. A student at Chaney High School, Terria's school and community activities are Spanish Club, S.A.D.D., Student Advisory Board, Chaney Chorale, Choral Company, peer mediator, Medical Careers Club, History Club, Tavis Smiley Foundation, Senior Committee, FCA, YMCA Leaders Club and senior-class treasurer. Her honors are National Honor Society, Who's Who Among American High School Students, Tavis Smiley Foundation Ambassador Award, All-American Scholar, National Foreign Languages Award, National English Merit Award, WKBN Student Spotlight recipient for two years, 2002 homecoming court, Buckeye Review Spotlight: 2000 and Voice of Democracy participant award. Terria plans to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and become a pediatric nurse.
U Alexis K. Tillman, daughter of Calvin G. Tillman and Gertrude M. Tillman, who was second runner-up. She was presented by her father and escorted by Alex Hines. A student at Wilson High School, Alexis is involved in R.A.P.P. and P.R.I.D.E. She plans to attend a four-year college and become a neonatal nurse.
UTaRee J. Glenn-Avery, daughter of Paul C. and Annette Avery, who was presented by her father. Darrell D. Wiley was her escort. A Chaney student, she is senior-class president and yearbook editor, and is involved in Drama Club, chorale, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, S.A.D.D., Upward Bound, peer mediator and Student Advisory Board. Her honors are Voice of Democracy state finalist, Who's Who Among American High School Students, Achievement Academy, Upward Bound Student of the Year, Youngstown Board of Education Achievement Award. She plans to attend Clark-Atlanta University in Atlanta, and her goal is become a child psychologist.
U Ashley S. Jones, daughter of Cheryl Traylor, was presented by Edward Hunter Sr. and was escorted by Ronald Smith. A student at Ursuline, her activities are Key Club, Spanish Club, Multicultural Club, Students of Stewardship, flag line and track. She is a member of the National Honor Society and was named to Who's Who in American High School Students and National Honor Roll. Ashley plans to attend Ohio State University and major in biomedical sciences. She plans to become a physician's assistant.
U La'Toya Jenae Little, daughter of Therasa Ann Hilton and Donald J. Huff, was presented by her father and escorted by Jerome A. Straugher. A student at Woodrow Wilson High School, La'Toya is co-captain of the cheerleading squad and secretary ofS.W.M., and is involved in Key Club, French Club, P.R.I.D.E.,V.I.S.I.O.N., R.A.P.P. and Youngstown Student Advisory. She is in advanced placement chemistry. La'Toya plans to major in chemistry and medicine in college and become a nurse or surgeon.
U Dontaira Terrell, daughter of Don and Ellen Terrell, who was presented by her father and escorted by August Terrell. A student at Ursuline, she is involved in Students of Stewardship, Science Club and Multicultural Club, and is captain of varsity volleyball. She is an honor-roll student. Dontaira plans to attend a historical black college and major in public relations and business marketing. Her goal is working in entertainment marketing.
UCiara G. Thomas, daughter of Duane and Felicia Thomas, who was escorted by Curtis Ingram and presented by her father. A Chaney student, Ciara is vice president of Spanish Club, a peer mediator and a volunteer at Ridge Crest Care Center, and is involved in Student Advisory Board, band, Upward Bound and S.A.D.D. She is on the honor roll and received the Golden Rule Award. Ciara plans to attend college and be either a physical therapist or national broadcaster.
U Eslyn Woodberry, daughter of Lillian Woodberry and John C. Jones, was presented by her father and escorted by Abdul Jordan. A student at Liberty High School, she participates in the speech and debate team and volleyball. She is named in Who's Who Among American High School Students and is on the honor roll. She plans to attend Northeastern University in Boston and major in prelaw. Her goal is to become a juvenile court judge.
Proceeds from the ball benefit the scholarship fund.
Elsina Winston and Doris Bullock were ball co-chairwomen, and Phyllis Cross is league president.
