COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (AP) -- Mount Union senior running back Dan Pugh, who is two touchdowns shy of the single-season collegiate touchdown record, has won this season's Gagliardi Trophy.
The award, which goes to the outstanding student-athlete in NCAA Division III football, is named for St. John's University football coach John Gagliardi, the most winning active coach in college football with 400 career victories.
It will be presented to Pugh in a ceremony Thursday as part of the buildup to Saturday's Division III national championship game between the Purple Raiders (13-0) and Trinity (Texas) University (14-0) in Salem, Va.
Pugh, who has carried the ball 335 times for 2,050 yards and 31 touchdowns this season, is the fourth Mount Union player to win the award since its inception in 1993.
Pugh's 37 touchdowns are the most in Division III and leave him two away from the all-division single-season collegiate record of 39, set by Oklahoma State's Barry Sanders in 1988.
Pugh's five rushing touchdowns in last weekend's national semifinal victory over John Carroll (Ohio) tied a Division III single-game playoff mark.
