YOUNGSTOWN -- Thomas R. Hollern, area president for National City Bank, Northeast Region, is chairman of the American Heart Association's 2003 American Heart Walk. The event, which for the first time combines the Mahoning/Columbiana and Trumbull divisions, is scheduled for Sept. 13 at Youngstown State University. The goal is $143,000. Hollern, an avid walker, was previously chairman of the board, president and CEO of Ohio Bancorp and president and CEO of the Dollar Savings and Trust Co. He is involved in the community, serving on the boards of trustees for numerous organizations and foundations.

GIRARD -- The Girard City Health Department offers a well-child clinic at 11 a.m. Tuesday at 100 W. Main St. The clinic is free to Girard city children. Smallpox conference
CLEVELAND -- A conference called Smallpox: Planning for Exposure; Assessment of Preparedness is 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cleveland Museum of Natural History, 1 Wade Oval in University Circle. Dr. Nathan A. Berger, chairman of the conference and director of the Center for Science, Health and Society at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, said the program is to alert health services personnel, safety forces and the general public about the government directive for pre-event smallpox vaccination, to make them aware of regional planning activities and arrangement and to provide a forum for discussion of unresolved issues and late-breaking information. Although the plan involved Cuyahoga County and Cleveland, people from other counties may find the information useful as a model for their communities, Dr. Berger said.
