File away these helpful fingernail tips

Learn how to file and buff away nail imperfections.
NEW YORK (AP) -- For many people, this is the busiest time of year, but that's no reason to let your nails go. Otherwise, all that wrapping and unwrapping of gifts surely will take its toll.
Here are Tweezerman's tips to help keep your hands in shape:
URemove any old polish or top coats, and thoroughly rinse and dry hands afterward. Use a nailbrush with soft, flexible bristles for the hands and top of nails, and a brush with small, stiffer bristles for cleaning under nails.
UFile nails to shape and buff away any imperfections. When shaping nails, file in one direction instead of back and forth. Use long, smooth strokes and never saw at the nail. Avoid metal files as they can damage and tear nails.
UMoisturize nails, cuticles and surrounding areas. Soak hands in warm water or applying a warm cloth to help lock in moisture. (Olive oil works wonders on the cuticles and nail beds.)
UOnce you've moisturized, gently push back the cuticle with a stainless steel pusher. If you cut dead skin and hangnails, be sure not to cut live skin and never remove the cuticle completely -- this leads to infection.
UBlend polish by rolling the bottle between your palms. Shaking causes air bubbles.
UStart with a base coat. Let it dry for three minutes, and then apply two coats of the desired color. Work from base of nail to top. Finally, add a top coat to lock in color.
