Joseph Robert Valicenti, 90, formerly of Youngstown, died Wednesday at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Valicenti was sports director for WBBW-AM in the 1960s and '70s. He did play-by-play basketball and football broadcasts of local high school and Youngstown College games and is especially remembered for his "exciting and emotional" style.
His sports journal show featured local sports standouts such as George Poschner, Dike Beede, Dom Rosselli, Frank Sinkwich, Helene Gran and others.
Valicenti helped organize the Youngstown District Amateur Golf Association, started the Curbstone Coaches (along with Chuck Perazich) and initiated the Youngstown Pee Wee Golf Tournament.
Following his retirement in 1980 he moved to Chattanooga and became a favorite announcer for golf tournaments in the Tennessee and Georgia areas.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Chattanooga; a son, Jack of Lexington, Ky.; a brother, Jim of Youngstown; and a granddaughter, Tina Howe of Winston-Salem, N.C.
