BOARDMAN -- Jeff Kane and Andy Davis each had two goals and an assist and the Canfield High ice hockey team used a 30-7 shots-on-goal disparity to its advantage in a 5-1 win over Twinsburg on Friday at the Ice Zone.
The Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League game, which started late due to a miscommunication in starting time, featured 30 penalties (18 by Canfield and 12 on the Ice Tigers) and the ejection of Twinsburg head coach Val Hernandez.
It marked the first win of the season for the Cardinals (1-7-1, 1-4). Twinsburg is still looking for its first win of the season after five tries, remaining winless in the loop at 0-4.
"How we won tonight wasn't pretty, but a win is a win and we'll take it," Canfield coach Joe Villano said. "We were undisciplined in our style of play, never adjusting to the way that the refs were calling the game."
The early part of the season has been frustrating for the Cardinals.
Canfield takes early lead
When Kane (assisted by both Tim Jones and Pat Anderson) found the net just 55 seconds into the contest, it gave Canfield a 1-0 lead, which it would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Alex Vrable then assisted Davis on the first of his two goals at 8:26 of the opening period as Canfield built a 2-0 advantage after the first period.
Twinsburg had three power play opportunities in the opening period, yet was out-shot 12-3 by the Cardinals.
"Jeff Kane and Andy Davis are the two who maintained their discipline tonight," Villano said. "They showed their leadership tonight like they have done all season long. We needed to pass and skate to open areas and they both did that very thing all night long."
Davis then teamed with Kane for a shorthanded goal at 4:46 of the second period, which gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead just 20 minutes into the game.
Hernandez ejected
Hernandez, after a heated exchange with the officials, was then tossed out of the game at the 12:00 mark of the second period, seemingly injecting life into his Ice Tigers. Bill Bartok ruined Cardinal goalie Ryan DeJoe's bid for a shutout with an unassisted goal just 27 seconds later.
Kane, assisted by Steve Kline, then scored at 2:54 of the final period to give Canfield a 4-1 lead, while Philipp Tolf, a senior foreign exchange student from Germany who is playing his first season of organized hockey, used Davis' set-up pass to score the game's final goal at 3:28, securing the Cardinals' first victory of the season.
"Ryan DeJoe has been steady for us all year," Villano said. "He has kept us in games that we have had no business being in.
"He has sometimes been seeing over 40 shots on goal a game so for him to reject six of the seven shots that he saw tonight, it was almost as if he had a day off."
Mooney-Ursuline 7, Massillon Jackson 1
Phil Colucci had three goals, while Justin Umbs, Allan Neher, Eric Smith and Mark Stoner had one apiece as Mooney-Ursuline defeated Massillon Jackson.
Smith and Umbs had one assist apiece, while goalie Joe Carothers stopped 29 of 30 shots for Mooney-Ursuline (5-1-2). Massillon Jackson dipped to 2-5-1.
The Mooney-Ursuline team plays today at 3 p.m at the Ice Zone against Fort LeBeouf.
