AUSTINTOWN -- Dolores Kunic, an English teacher at Fitch High School, has received National Board Certification in language arts. National Board Certification is a yearlong process in which teachers complete performance assessments and written exercises that test their understanding of the material they teach. The school board presented Kunic with a plaque honoring her achievement Monday night.
Buckeye Review speaker
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown City Schools Youth Force Club will host Buckeye Review executive director M. Mike McNair as a motivational speaker during a winter conference from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 23 at the Saxon Club, 710 S. Meridian Road.
Also at the event, the club and the Rayen High School Junior ROTC Program will donate items collected from a food drive to the Second Harvest Food Bank, and awards will be presented to students who have accomplished academic and vocational goals.
4-H award applications
WARREN -- Applications for various 4-H awards, travel opportunities and college scholarships will be accepted at the Trumbull County Ohio State University Extension Office until Jan. 10. Statewide, 4-H will award $39,000 is scholarships, trips worth $25,000 and awards worth more than $5,000.
Computers for public
LIBERTY -- Internet access, word processing, publishing program and a spreadsheet/database program are available to Liberty residents in room 205 of the W.S. Guy School, 4115 Shady Road, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursdays beginning January 9. The computer lab program will run through March 20. The computer lab is closed on Feb. 13. Children younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

Holy Family sign-ups
POLAND -- Registration begins Jan. 13 at 9 a.m. for Holy Family School's 2003-2004 kindergarten classes; registration for the preschool program is being taken.
Kindergarten applicants must bring a baptism certificate if not baptized at Holy Family, immunization records, the child's Social Security number, a copy of the child's birth certificate and a $25 registration fee. Registration forms can be picked up at the time of registration.
The preschool program for 4- and 5-year-olds includes language, religion, math, art, science and music and is offered morning or afternoon sessions, two, three or five days each week. Children must be potty trained.

History Day contest
YOUNGSTOWN -- Teachers interested in enrolling students in this year's state district-level National History Day contest at Youngstown State University are being asked to contact the YSU History Department.
The "Rights and Responsibilities in History" event, slated for 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 5, will draw about 600 students in grades six to 12 from Ashtabula, Geauga, Mahoning, Portage and Trumbull counties. Winners advance to a state finals competition in Columbus; state winners proceed to national finals in Maryland.

College access program
WARREN -- The Mahoning Valley College Access Program has received a $100,000 contribution from the Economic Development Foundation of the Warren Area Chamber of Commerce. A check was presented by Dr. David A. Allen, dean of Kent State University and foundation president.
Of the amount, $80,000 will help fund an endowment for last-dollar college scholarships for Trumbull County high school students; $20,000 will be used to further the goals of MVCAP.

MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Six new members, five of whom are alumni, have been named to the Allegheny College Board of Trustees.
Chris Allison, a 1983 graduate of the college, is chairman of Tollgrade Communications in Pittsburgh; Alice S. Bierer, 1959, is chief executive officer of Essex Grain Products Inc. in Frazer, Pa.; William H. Brown Jr., 1980, is first vice president of Merrill Lynch & amp; Co. Inc. in Sewickley, Pa.
Ann Jones Gerace, 1960, is executive director of the nonprofit Conservation Consultants Inc. in Pittsburgh; Hayes C. Stover, 1962, is a Harvard Law School graduate and an attorney and partner at Kirkpatrick & amp; Lockhart in Pittsburgh; Marvin Suomi, a former visiting fellow at the college, is president and CEO of KUD International of Santa Monica, Calif.
Law essay contest
COLUMBUS -- Students in grades 9 through 12 can enter the Ohio State Bar Association's "There Ought to Be a Law" essay contest in celebration of Law Day 2003. Regional finalists attend a Law Day Luncheon on May 1 and three from each of two divisions receive U.S. Savings Bond. Other prizes include a scholarship for a summer camp and academy.

AAA national contest
INDEPENDENCE -- The American Automobile Association kicks off the AAA Travel High School Challenge nationwide travel and geography competition in January, offering $156,000 in college scholarships.
Students in grades 9 through 12 take a Web-based exam at www.aaa.com/TravelChallenge. The top five in each state advance to a March state competition, where they take a written exam. State winners receive a $1,000 scholarship and compete nationally in Orlando, Fla., in May.
Six finalists win scholarships of $10,000 or $25,000 each.
