YOUNGSTOWN -- Senior Will Edwards and sophomore Emily Schnitkey added one more accomplishment to their list of many for the 2002 cross country season by being named to the Horizon League 2002 Fall Academic All-League Team.
Edwards, the men's team MVP, led the team in every race in the 2002 campaign. At the Malone Invitational, Edwards was the first collegiate runner to finish and led the team to a second-place finish and he placed sixth at the Spiked Shoe Invitational. He finished 12th at the All-Ohio Championship and earned second-team honors at the Horizon League Championship by finishing ninth. Edwards carried a 3.6 GPA, majoring in criminal justice.
Schnitkey earned academic honors by having a perfect 4.0 GPA, majoring in nutrition. As the women's MVP, Schnitkey also led the team in every race. She earned first-team honors at the Horizon League Championship by placing sixth at the meet and placed 11th at the All-Ohio Championships. She also finished third at the Notre Dame Invitational and topped her own school-record time in the 6k by 32 seconds with a time of 21:58.6.
The teams were chosen by the Horizon League Sports Information Directors and Faculty Athletic Representatives and must meet three criteria: have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better; have completed at least three semesters at the same institution; and be a starter or significant contributor on the team.

Poland girlsin tournament
MIDLAND, Pa. -- Poland High will play Moon Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Midland Basketball Association's girls shootout at the former Midland High School.
The tripleheader also features: Oakland Catholic against Greensburg Catholic at 6 p.m. and Blackhawk against Mt. Lebanon at 8 p.m.
Tickets cost $5 and will be available at the door.
Game change
NORTH LIMA -- Due to a conflict with the Fiesta Bowl, the Lowellville High boys basketball team will play at South Range on Jan. 2 at 8 p.m. At 6 p.m. that night the Lowellville girls will play at South Range. There will be no junior varsity games that evening.
Boardman wins
ERIE -- Boardman Hockey Club battled back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat Ft. LeBoeuf Bisons 7-5 at the Erie Igloo as Chris Collins stopped 36 shots for the winners.
The offense was led by Bob Walla (1 goal, 4 assists), Pat Rafeedie (2 goals, 1 assist), Jimmy Pipoly (2 goals) and Mike Matter (2 assists).
In a second contest the Spartans (4-6-1) lost to Harborcreek Huskies 8-5.

PITTSBURGH -- Right-handed reliever Brian Boehringer, a setup man who revived his career with Pittsburgh last season, agreed to a $3.8 million, two-year contract.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Wally Szczerbiak's recovery from an Oct. 8 toe injury continues to drag, and the Minnesota All-Star shooting guard is probably out until at least January.

* Todd Walker became Boston's regular second baseman when he was obtained from the Cincinnati Reds for two minor leaguers who will be identified within six months.
* Cuban pitcher Jose Contreras asked the commissioner's office to declare him a free agent, saying he had established residency in Mexico. Contreras defected in October while the Cuban national team was in Mexico.
* Darin Erstad of the World Series champion Anaheim Angels set the AL record for consecutive errorless chances by an outfielder and didn't know it at the time.
Erstad had 723 consecutive chances accepted from May 30, 2001, to last Sept. 22, breaking Ken Griffey Jr.'s record of 573. Erstad also set the single-season AL record with 458 consecutive errorless chances in the outfield, topping the 393 Devon White had in 1991.
Wager winneradmits rigging
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The man who nearly collected $3 million on a Pix Six bet from the Breeders' Cup admitted in federal court that the wager was rigged.
Derrick Davis, 29, of Baltimore, pleaded guilty to wire fraud conspiracy. He renounced any claim to the money. Sentencing was set for March 11.
Moss avoidsjail time
MINNEAPOLIS -- Vikings wide receiver Randy Moss avoided jail time and a minor drug charge with a plea bargain, resolving accusations that he had bumped a traffic safety officer with his car.
Hennepin County District Judge Mark Wernick fined Moss $1,200 and sentenced him to 30 days in jail but gave him two days' credit for time already served, and stayed the rest as long as Moss doesn't commit any similar careless driving offenses.
