Involvement in community service projects garners recognition of club members.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Uptown Kiwanis Club honored John R. Swierz, president of Youngstown City Council, as 2001-2002 Kiwanian of the Year during its annual President's Ball and award ceremony held Dec. 7 at Ezio's Restaurant.
Swierz, an Uptown Kiwanis board member and chairman of the community service committee, was recognized for his involvement in service projects and for bringing a new member into the club.
Bob Fish, who received the Past President's Award, presented certificates of service to club members who have jointly compiled more than 320 years of community service. He also outlined club accomplishments, including raising funds for charities, working with Ohio's Amber Alert Plan and providing scholarships.
Phil Mingo was in charge of the event and introduced Chuck Whitman, current lieutenant governor of Kiwanis.
Doug Everett paid tribute to the late D.D. Davis, a long-time member of the organization, for his years of dedication and contributions to the Mahoning Valley.
