Scouting report: Mount Union, riding college football's longest winning streak of 40 games, is coming off a 45-16 win over Wabash in an NCAA Division III quarterfinal playoff game last Saturday. The Purple Raiders, coached by Larry Kehres, are six-time national champions (1993-96-97-98, 2000-01), and won their eighth straight outright Ohio Athletic Conference championship this year. They enter the semifinal with wins in 93 of their last 94 games. John Carroll, coached by Regis Scafe, is coming off a 16-10 win over Brockport in overtime last Saturday in a semifinal. Saturday's survivor will play in the Stagg Bowl for the national championship on Dec. 21 at Salem Stadium in Salem, Va., against the winner of Saturday's other semifinal between St. John's, Minn. (12-1) and Trinity, Texas (13-0). Mount Union defeated John Carroll during the regular season, 35-16. The two teams will be meeting for the 21st time, with the Purple Raiders holding a 16-2-2 advantage in the series. The last time the Blue Streaks beat the Purple Raiders was in 1989, 31-7. The two teams tied 20-20 in 1991 and since then MUC has won 12 in a row. Stan Watson, a senior LB for MUC from Austintown Fitch, has the second-most tackles on the team with 81. The leader is Matt Campbell, a senior DE, with 92. Brian Brooke, a senior LB for John Carroll from Cardinal Mooney High, ranks No. 2 on the team in tackles with 91, including 41 solo stops and 16 tackles for losses of 52 yards. The JCU leader is senior MLB Chris Cubero with 134 tackles, including 78 unassisted. Ryan Wolf is the Blue Streaks' punter. The senior from West Branch is averaging 35.0 yards for 62 punts.
