3 men indicted
LISBON -- A Columbiana County grand jury handed up indictments against three men.
Those charged and the crimes with which they are accused are John Peterson, 33, Harrison Avenue, Lisbon, carrying a concealed weapon; Bud Hull, 23, Lisbon Street, East Liverpool, domestic violence; and James Yost Jr., 26, Toronto, Ohio, felonious assault.
Knife in school
SALEM -- A 14-year-old Salem High School student said he brought a hunting knife to school because he'd been threatened by two other boys. He faces possible criminal charges and a one-year expulsion.
Police were called to the school Thursday after school officials found the knife, which had a 4 1/2-inch blade.
He is suspended, pending an expulsion hearing and possible charges, Superintendent Dr. David Brobeck said this morning.
Trustees to meet
NORTH LIMA -- The Beaver Township Trustees plan to meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at the township building to work on the 2003 budget.
Officials said no action will be taken and they will schedule a meeting to adopt the 2003 budget later this month. The trustees will also meet as scheduled for their monthly session at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the township building.
Adult sentence possible
LISBON -- A 17-year-old East Liverpool boy charged in connection with an Oct. 27 shooting faces a possible adult sentence.
The Columbiana County prosecutor's office and defense attorneys agreed earlier this week that the boy will be designated a "serious youth offender."
That means that, if convicted, the boy could be held in a juvenile facility until 21 and then sent to an adult prison to finish his term. He will be tried in juvenile court.
The boy is charged with three counts of felonious assault, bearing a total maximum sentence of 27 years. Authorities allege he fired a handgun at a car carrying three people in East Liverpool. He is in the county juvenile detention facility.
Cops seek bank robber
BESSEMER, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police and the FBI are looking for the man who robbed First Commonwealth Bank, 409 E. Poland Ave., without displaying a weapon. The man handed a note to a teller demanding money at about noon Thursday. The robber grabbed an undetermined amount of money from the cash drawer after the teller opened it then calmly walked outside and west on Poland Avenue, police said. The robber is described as a 38- to 43-year-old white male, about 5-foot-5, weighing 160-180 pounds, clean shaven, with gray and brown bushy hair, wearing a gray hooded sweat shirt and blue jeans.
Christmas songs
LISBON -- The Western Reserve Brass Quintet will provide music for an evening of Christmas song and dance at 7 p.m. Sunday at the New Lisbon Presbyterian Church. The event is free and open to the public. It is expected to last an hour and will be followed by a social hour.
Teacher attacked
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A teacher at the Youth Development Center in Shenango Township suffered a broken nose after he was attacked by one of the residents. Pennsylvania State Police said Thursday that a 15-year-old from Pittsburgh hit a gym teacher in the face with a hockey stick at about 1:50 p.m. Wednesday. The teacher had asked the boy to sit down during gym class because he was being a discipline problem, police said. The teacher was treated at Jameson Hospital. The 15-year-old was charged with aggravated assault. This is the second assault this week at YDC. A 19-year-old inmate broke another employee's arm Monday as staff members were searching the inmate for contraband, police said. That inmate was also charged with aggravated assault.
Toys for Tots drive
MERCER, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police at the Mercer Barracks have renewed their request for help with the annual U.S. Marine Corps' Toys for Tots drive, saying contributions are far behind last year's drive. The collection, which began last month, is scheduled to end Monday. Only new toys are being accepted and police ask that they not be gift-wrapped so that parents can make selections based on what their children want. All toys collected will be distributed to families in Mercer County.
Pets and Santa
BOARDMAN -- Animal Appeal will offer photos of pets with Santa Claus on Saturday and Sunday at the Petsmart store at 1101 Doral Drive, Boardman. Photos will be taken between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. both days at a cost of $9.95. No appointment is required. Some of the proceeds will go to Animal Appeal, which is a private organization that helps homeless animals.
